adam44mb 2 Posted March 5, 2023 Posted March 5, 2023 Is it a good idea to buy my own emby password and connect to my family members modem and use it wirelessly with remote service?
seanbuff 1318 Posted March 5, 2023 Posted March 5, 2023 Hi, you don't purchase an Emby "password" - you can buy an Emby Premiere Key, install your own server and create as many user accounts / passwords as you like. See here for more details: https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44001159034-quick-start
adam44mb 2 Posted March 5, 2023 Author Posted March 5, 2023 Yes but on the same network as my family members, do I need to make a new port to use ?
seanbuff 1318 Posted March 5, 2023 Posted March 5, 2023 Where do you plan to install your Emby Server?

pwhodges 2012 Posted March 5, 2023 Posted March 5, 2023 You don't need to buy a password - you don't need to buy anything to run Emby in many situations, but either a one-off payment for a dedicated client or a subscription to Premiere gains you a lot. But in any case, to install and run the server for testing that you can do what you want is free. You need a computer on which the server can run, and have access to the files - either directly or through a network share of a disk or the relevant directories. You only need to think about ports (and forwarding through the router) if you want to access the server away from the house. https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44001159034-quick-start Paul

If your concern is using your families device limit - then assuming they are already premier, you can opt to EXTEND the license for more users - taking you to 45 or more users. But unless you have that many concurrent users, you will probably be more than covered using the basic license. Maybe just contribute to that if you feel you need to. https://emby.media/premiere-ext.html

Sounds like there are two Emby server running on different computers in the same household pointing to the same media, correct? Yes this can be done and yes you can get your own Emby Premiere key for your server. But depending on how metadata/images are configured can create conflicts if both servers are writing with media. If not written with media this will not be a problem. It Remote access is involved each server will need to be on different ports.

So for his server he has it save all of the cover info and everything else and on mine it will be set to not save anything also using port 1234 instead of 8096. This is a great option for my household and it allows me to save money each month instead of paying $120 a month for satellite tv which I now cancelled. In place of that will be a $15 a month iptv service and pay my cousin $30 a month for the power and managing it making sure everything has cover art and works good. Over time less than a year the computer I bought and the emby premiere will have paid for itself. Thank you to all who answered my questions this was a great help, this emby software allowed me to cut my bill in more than half. Thank you. 1
adam44mb 2 Posted March 9, 2023 Author Posted March 9, 2023 I have been telling people at work about this and would like to know would each person need to have their own computer for this along with the premiere or can more than one server go on one computer.

What would these other people be wanting to achieve exactly? Access to your family members media library / IPTV? While yes, multiple servers can run on the same machine (albeit on separate ports, and ensuring metadata fetching is not conflicting with other servers) -- but why not just create additional users on the same server?
adam44mb 2 Posted March 9, 2023 Author Posted March 9, 2023 I was just informed I can have one username setup so only one person can use it at a time meaning if someone shared the password only one person could watch it. This being said if I let a few friends use it I would be guaranteed not to run into an issue that my 25 spots are being used if I let 3 people use it. It would be only for the movies not live tv so I can just add movie folder right ?

This is not true at all. You can buy a Premiere Key which comes with a 25 device limit (see here: https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44001173135-is-there-a-limit-to-emby-premiere) You can create as many user accounts on your Emby Server as you like, each user can be assigned an Emby Connect account (or not) to easily connect to your server remotely and will have access to whatever libraries / features you configure for them. Happy2Play 9783 Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 From an IPTV standpoint sure you will be limited by their concurrent connections limit but that has nothing to do with Emby. 1
