Emby on TCL c835 tv not playing DV/Atmos/DTS

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a TCL 55" c835, installing on the TV itself I just tried the Emby for Android TV app from the Playstore as well as the apk download link on the main Emby website (seems to be the same version).

Stream from my Emby server no Dolby Vision/Atmos/DTS content would engage the TV's dv/Atmos detection modes.

Checking the Display Mode output while watching any video shows only a 1080/60 and 1080/50 modes.

Does anyone else have this issue?

I also tested plugging my NVIDIA Shield TV Pro into one of the HDMI ports on the tv, running the same Emby this engages the DV/Atmos/DTS modes correctly on the TV. Could it be that Emby doesn't know how to deal with the soc chipset on this TV?

Hi,

I've just follow the steps and send the logs through using the Emby for Android TV app.

Emby user: shadovv

Played 4 clips of different types and features.

DV + Atmos,

DV only,

DV @ 60fps,

SDR with DTS:X audio.

Let me know if the logs came through.

Thanks.

Hi.  Do you have the TV set to 4K resolution in a mode compatible with DV before starting playback?  When run directly on the TV, the app cannot see any modes other than 1080.

TV is set to "movie" mode, when it detects a source being played with DV, the TV will enage Dolby Vision mode automatically. This is the same functionality that most other TV's do, as you can not "switch on" DV manually.

You can not set a different resolution on this tv manually, it is base on the source, however in this case since it's directly using a TV app, it's not switching to any HDMI source resolution.

hello i have the same tv and i have no problems with dolby vision and dts, i have problems with ac3 audio with bitrate equal to or higher than 640kbs, i can't tell you about atmos because i don't have any title with atmos

Hi @papugo1980, when you say you don't have problem with Dolby Vision and DTS, do you mean you can play DV/DTS content using the Emby app installed on the TV and the TV will engage the DV mode correctly? Because I can play DV content but only standard HDR mode is engaged.

When you start a clip with DV content there should be a popup on the top left indicating DV mode, your picture mode should automatically be switched over to 'Dolby Vision IQ' or 'Dolby Vision Dark/Light/Game' mode in your picture settings, if not you're not really watching DV but just standard HDR or SDR.

I can get the DV mode to be activated if I'm watching DV content on Disney+ or AppleTV apps on the TV, but doing the same on Emby app does not.

yes, when I play titles with dolby vision, the popup appears at the top left, same thing for the dts, what firmware do you have?

@papugo1980This is my current firmware.20230305_002222.thumb.jpg.4735554133aa82b5ddeceab62b19f9f7.jpg

ok also the same firmware, now I test with the files you posted, but you don't have problems with ac3 and eac3?

Tested a clip ac3 with only stereo channels and that works fine.

However when testing ac3 and eac3 with multi-channel (5.1) or Atmos, I get choppy audio output.

I installed the Kodi app just to test, and all eac3 audio plays properly with Kodi, however I think Kodi downmix multi-channel (5.1) back to down to stereo.

As a test I set Kodi to output 2.1 instead of 2.0, and immediately any 5.1 ac3 audio gets the same choppy audio.

No idea why though.

ok i tested the demos and they are not with dolby vision but with hdr10, the dolby atmos works by selecting the eac3 7.1 audio, but being dolby with a high bitrate i have distorted audio problems...

More than likely, different types of Dolby Vision.  The streaming guys all use a specific profile of DV that most TVs support.  Discs, however, usually use a different profile and many TVs don't support that but will fall back to HDR in those instances.

That sounds like what is happening here.

I just tested this out with content that has DV5 Profile, which should be the same as the AppleTV Dolby Vision streaming. And and playing with Emby it does engage the DV mode on the TV, however it is definitely not in the original 4K resolution and the video stutters alot, as well as choppy Atmos audio.

I've already sent a debug log when this test was played if you want to have a look at the log.

@Luke / @ebr,

These are the reference clips I used to test DV and various other Dolby features.

https://mega.nz/folder/oSEnGChR#jTTsuQh_7YJAOVHb-G3Yrw

These are from a reference Dolby demo disc, similar ones used in stores while showing demos of tv's.

I will test this files on my TCL C735 with the old "working" version of Emby too and give you a feedback.

So with Emby 1.8.55g only HDR10 works and no DolbyVision icon appears.....

A version of the app that old is going to have a number of problems with the current server and also be missing features.

Sure but this version plays all my files on this device without problems. And this ist the only workaround till now in TCL TVs.

Many people have problems to play files with EAC3 audio in TCL devices with versions above my named version of emby.

Hi.  Can you try sideloading our standard android app on the same device and see how that compares?

https://emby.media/emby-for-android.html

Thanks.

@Luke,

Hi, I've already tried that option, no difference.

If anything the normal Android app runs worst then the one designed for Android TV, as the UI for the player controls are all out of ratio and the normal menu options isn't were it's meant to be.

@shadovv why do you think the player controls are worse and out of ratio? What exactly do you mean?

What normal menu options are not where they're supposed to be?

I've tried this.. I've actually also tried the beta version 2.0.95.

Both have the same issue, when playing any content 4K content with HDR/DV....  it won't actually play the content in 4K at all, even though sometimes the HDR activates.

I've set the player settings to match the video resolution, but that didn't seem to do anything either.

This still looks like an app bug with these Android TV's where if the main Android TV UI is rendered in 1080p, when using Emby for Android TV app it won't switch or won't render 4K.

At least on this TCL 55" c835 TV. I've actually tried this same thing on a Sony TV X9000 and the Emby app works fine on that rendering 4K content, but I think Sony made their Android TV render the main UI screen at full 4K from the start.
