echoxxzz 22 Posted February 26, 2023 Posted February 26, 2023 I have 2 Amazon FireTV 4K sticks and both of them have the exact same problem. If I connect either stick to an LGTV PGS subtitles are not rendered. If I take the sticks to a really old Samsung TV they work fine. Other competitor applications work just fine rendering PGS subtitles on both TV so this has to be an Emby issue.
Happy2Play 9780 Posted February 26, 2023 Posted February 26, 2023 Hi there, let's look at an example. Please attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue. Thanks! Not really enough info to compare. Are playback methods the same across the board?
echoxxzz 22 Posted February 27, 2023 Author Posted February 27, 2023 Here are my server logs. I tried to create the FireTV app logs by enabling the debug option but no additional tile showed up on my home page using either of my two FireTV sticks. What I have noticed is that when the FireTV stick is plugged into the LG TV, Emby is trying to remux the video whereas when it is plugged into the Samsung TV it just streams it directly. I have video transcoding disabled for all accounts on my Emby server as I have no use for it as all my devices support HEVC. I do have audio transcoding enabled as not all my device support E-AC3 audio. I also tried the Emby app from the LG Store and it has the exact same problem as the FireTV stick. I created two sets of debug enabled server logs. One, when I played the movie on the FireTV stick and another set of logs when I used the native LG Emby app. FireTV.rar LG.rar

You actually do have a use for it - properly displaying these subtitles which may require transcoding. Can you please try re-enabling that?
echoxxzz 22 Posted February 27, 2023 Author Posted February 27, 2023 (edited) I can understand the Emby for LG TV requiring a remux but not the FireTV stick just because it's plugged into a different HDMI device. But I will enable transcoding even though that's not what the FireTV is trying to do and see if makes a difference. Edited February 27, 2023 by echoxxzz
echoxxzz 22 Posted February 27, 2023 Author Posted February 27, 2023 With video transcoding enabled it work and it says on the Emby Dashboard it's because it wants to burnin the subs. The problem is now it's streaming my hEVC videos as H.264 videos and transcoding the audio from DTSHD into 384kbps AC3 so it looks likes garbage and sounds like garbage all because the FireTV stick is connected to an LG TV whereas if it's connected to an ancient 15 year old Samsung TV it works just fine. It really shouldn't matter what device the FireTV stick is plugged into it.
ebr 16178 Posted February 27, 2023 Posted February 27, 2023 If all you are using is TV speakers, then set the audio option to "Mix down to stereo" and you will get direct playback. The Fire doesn't support DTS-HD.
echoxxzz 22 Posted February 27, 2023 Author Posted February 27, 2023 I connected a bluray player to my LGTV and I can play Bluray movies with PGS subtitles not problems using the exact same HDMI interface as the FIreTV stick. I also tried that Pl** product and it works just fine using the FireTV stick with video transcoding disabled.
ebr 16178 Posted February 27, 2023 Posted February 27, 2023 Hi. A BD player is doing all the rendering itself. Did you try this? 29 minutes ago, ebr said: set the audio option to "Mix down to stereo"
echoxxzz 22 Posted February 27, 2023 Author Posted February 27, 2023 (edited) yes i did. a bluray player does all the rendering by itself and so does the Amazon FireTV stick. As far as the TV is concerned it's just a HDMI device connected to it. It's not like the TV is receiving raw HEVC video and it's doing the rendering. My Samsung TV that actually works and shows PGS subs is so old there is no way it would know how to render HEVC so clearly the FireTV stick is doing all the rendering. echoxxzz 22 Posted March 9, 2023 Author Posted March 9, 2023 Since Emby seems reluctant to acknowledge and fix this bug I'll just use Plex on the FireTV stick or take the time to convert the PGS subs to SRT so I can continue to use Emby (which I honestly prefer).
Luke 42078 Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 @echoxxzz Hi. Can you try sideloading our standard android app on the same device and see how that compares? https://emby.media/emby-for-android.html Thanks.
echoxxzz 22 Posted April 5, 2023 Author Posted April 5, 2023 Using the standard Android app works perfectly. I can play PGS subs without having to transcode the video. 1
echoxxzz 22 Posted April 10, 2023 Author Posted April 10, 2023 Yes I'm ok using this solution. I just have to remember to manually do the updates once and awhile. 1
