Flest 8 Posted February 11, 2023 Posted February 11, 2023 (edited) if the device supports hdr, why does the server use tone mapping? source - 4k hdr android can play h265 with hdr but the server uses h264 for transcoding... is this a bug? server should use h264 with tone mapping for devices without h265 support I'm right? GrimReaper 4749 Posted February 11, 2023 Posted February 11, 2023 Have you explored Stats for Nerds to see reason for transcoding? You can observe same in server Dashboard. And you can also post ffmpeg log created, as transcoding reasons can be various.
ebr 16187 Posted February 11, 2023 Posted February 11, 2023 Hi. Transcoding to HDR is not currently possible. We can investigate why your item is transcoding with the information requested above. Thanks. how to report a media playback issue.

Thanks. because I chose transcoding) for local playback i use direct playback or kodi, but when i'm not at home i use transcoding. and i would like to be able to transcode to h265 (almost all devices support h265) why does it encode in h264 if the device supports h265?

GrimReaper 4749 Posted February 11, 2023 Posted February 11, 2023 It IS a link to a Feature Request topic with the title "Transcode in H265".

I don't see an answer in this topic, off topic seems like the requests is dead ((( first post from 2017 Edited February 11, 2023 by Flest

Meaning same has been requested and the topic is still open as it is not yet implemented, I don't know of any other way to explain it to you. You can support it by up voting first post.

I understand that the request is open But it's been 5.5 years... something tells me that voting will not change the situation ((( it is unlikely that they will ever do this, it is more likely that n265 will become obsolete sooner at such a speed of implementation, it is necessary to start implementing av1

Luke 42083 Posted February 12, 2023 Posted February 12, 2023 Actually it's not related to either of those. When transcoding, the HDR info is lost, so it has to be tonemapped.
