Przemek 70 Posted February 8, 2023 Posted February 8, 2023 Hello, today I noticed that my server is very hot when Emby is streaming to two users. It goes to ` CPU temp : WARNING: 74 °C / 165 °F : Reducing the life of your device`. ``` System: Kernel: 5.10.0-21-amd64 x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 10.2.1 Console: tty 0 Distro: Debian GNU/Linux 11 (bullseye) Machine: Type: Mini-pc System: HP product: HP EliteDesk 800 G3 DM 65W v: N/A serial: <filter> Mobo: HP model: 829A v: KBC Version 06.29 serial: <filter> UEFI [Legacy]: HP v: P21 Ver. 02.38 date: 04/21/2021 CPU: Info: Quad Core model: Intel Core i5-7500 bits: 64 type: MCP arch: Kaby Lake rev: 9 L2 cache: 6 MiB flags: avx avx2 lm nx pae sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 sse4_2 ssse3 vmx bogomips: 27199 Speed: 3628 MHz min/max: 800/3800 MHz Core speeds (MHz): 1: 3628 2: 3579 3: 3312 4: 3648 Graphics: Device-1: Intel HD Graphics 630 vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: i915 v: kernel bus ID: 00:02.0 Display: server: X.org 1.20.11 driver: loaded: i915 note: n/a (using device driver) tty: 110x30 Message: Advanced graphics data unavailable in console. Luke 42077 Posted February 8, 2023 Posted February 8, 2023 Hi, well you've got transcoding sessions going on here. That's going to be a resource intensive process. 1
GrimReaper 4739 Posted February 8, 2023 Posted February 8, 2023 Besides, 74°C could hardly be called very hot.
Przemek 70 Posted February 8, 2023 Author Posted February 8, 2023 So it's not a problem for my CPU? It's OK now but I'm worried if more people will watch something it will be higher and destroy my CPU?
GrimReaper 4739 Posted February 8, 2023 Posted February 8, 2023 That depends of what kind of tasks will your CPU be performing, even though specs of your machine list QS-enabled Intel CPU, some tasks cannot be hardware acellerated and will fall on CPU itself. Or maybe your HD630 ain't recognized so you're not getting any HWA at all - post hardware detection log and ffmpeg log for that transcoding session.
Przemek 70 Posted February 8, 2023 Author Posted February 8, 2023 I noticed recently that there was 3 streamings in one time and CPU was only 56 C so it's not always that hot. hardware_detection-63811444035.txt ffmpeg-transcode-f4f00a3a-8c86-49a9-b7cf-7ceff2fe0a4f_1.txt

As said previously, it depends what kind of tasks might befell your CPU; maybe those 3 streams were DirectPlays or Direct Straems, maybe transcoding wasn't resource intensive, as according your logs you're getting HWA - btw, nothing in that log indicates anything that should tax your CPU, it's a regular 1080p AVC transcode due to bitrate limit done in hardware, which shouldn't give a sweat to your setup, are you sure that is the right log from 74C event?

Okay, well as @GrimReaper advised - nothing looks amiss in that log, and your system is already making use of HWA via VAAPI. You may be able to take advantage of choosing QuickSync (QSV) in the upcoming 4.8 release where it was enabled for Linux systems. It's possible you might see some improvements there. seanbuff 1315 Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 Actually, QSV should already be available - are you able to disable VAAPI and select QSV instead to test if there is any difference?

seanbuff 1315 Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 Make sure to "test" it first, as you may run into issues as described here - where it's stated that should be fixed in 4.8.x release https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/113702-unable-to-hard-decode-h265-video/&do=findComment&comment=1199918 Seems VAAPI works better for the meantime while you're still on 4.7.x stable.
Przemek 70 Posted February 9, 2023 Author Posted February 9, 2023 (edited) OK. How to test. Just play something? It's OK like that? Edited February 9, 2023 by Przemek
seanbuff 1315 Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 25 minutes ago, Przemek said: OK. How to test. Just play something? It's OK like that? Yes, simulate some transcoding sessions (by reducing in-app quality, etc) Also try completely disabling VAAPI, so that QuickSync is the only option.

I try one movie and there's only that streaming right now. I noticed that temp incrase: `WARNING: 78 °C / 159 °F : Reducing the life of your device` I watching my dietpi-dashboard now and it is 71-78 C in first and now is decresing 64 .... 59 .....and so on Edited February 9, 2023 by Przemek
seanbuff 1315 Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 Post the logs for that session? Did you monitor the actual CPU during that time? Those temps are not even that high tbh. Is this alert of high temps something new with your server?

The first temps are about 77 C but then it goes down. I recently noticed that is so high (78 C) but meybe I missed that before. embyserver-63811528450.txt ffmpeg-transcode-622dd38c-ddc1-4ea0-bdb9-af33a42178ef_1.txt hardware_detection-63811528456.txt embyserver (1).txt
neik 873 Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 70-80 degree C is by no mean any harm to a modern CPU. The CPU is designed to work fine up to 100C - see: https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/97123/intel-core-i57500-processor-6m-cache-up-to-3-80-ghz.html Besides, every modern CPU would throttle itself before getting damage (apart from missing coolling at all). 1
Przemek 70 Posted February 9, 2023 Author Posted February 9, 2023 OK, thanks for reassuring me. I will sleep better
Q-Droid 989 Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 While that temp is within operational limits it seems on the high side if streaming/transcoding are all that's going on. Your PC model looks like a typical e-Bay refurb/lease return. If you got this PC used then check the CPU fan/cooler to make sure it's running well and not clogged with dust. If you have some thermal paste (TIM) on hand you could also clean/refresh it for the CPU. Is your temp monitor also showing fan speeds? If not then sensors (lm-sensors) if you have it should display that info from the command line.
Przemek 70 Posted February 9, 2023 Author Posted February 9, 2023 Yes, I buy it from store that sell leased computers. I will do that thermal paste improve. dietpi@DietPi:~$ sensors coretemp-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter Package id 0: +45.0°C (high = +80.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 0: +43.0°C (high = +80.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 1: +43.0°C (high = +80.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 2: +43.0°C (high = +80.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 3: +45.0°C (high = +80.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) dietpi@DietPi:~$
Q-Droid 989 Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 Ah, it's installed but I think it hasn't been configured yet. There's a command to configure lm-sensors, try this guide: https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/install-sensors-lm-sensors-on-ubuntu-debian-linux/ Other thing to check is that the PSU fan is working since that might be the only case fan on this machine. I don't know if this has a separate case fan.
