Access smb share without granting permission to all

Hi Emby team,

 

So I thought a NAS wasn't worth the investment, so I've decided to plug a hard drive into my router (Asus AX86U), and set up an smb share. Everything worked when connecting to it via my laptop (using my router admin username and password), though I couldn't add that path to an Emby media library. Then I realised it's because Emby does not have access to the server, but I couldn't figure out how to grant Emby access or log in via Emby. 

What I'm currently doing is enabling sharing to everyone, and that worked. Though I'm just wondering if there is a better approach since what I am doing now would mean everyone connected to my wifi wireless access to all of my media files.

I guess if nobody connects to my home wifi but me I should be fine (Though still curious if there's another approach).

 

So I’ve managed to get a few movies on the hard drive to test it out. Emby plays incredibly slow on both my tv and my Mac, and I couldn’t figure out why.

I then thought maybe it was not Emby’s issue but that a router just could not handle it? So I tested this by connecting to the smb server directly through my laptop and playing the movie there; it worked perfectly and was super fast. Any idea what might I be doing wrong with setting up Emby?

@Beenzino what you could do instead is mount the network shares to a local path using Finder in macOS. Then add that local path into Emby Server instead of the network path.

This will allow you to configure authentication for the network share (in Finder). Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.
