There's no other type of plugin which can add content for display in clients.

What would be needed for this use case would be an item type "Link", to model a link to an existing item. This would allow a channel plugin to model the watch history as "link items", which aren't actual items itself and hence wouldn't pop pup anywhere else instead (or in addition) to the actual items.

Channel plugins are there to bring additional content into Emby server, like from online services, e.g. podcasts, cameras, or any other service which provides video or audio content. Just look at the list of available channel plugins for examples.

But it needs to be unique and individual content. When a channel plugin returns "watched items" as content, then that's like separate and different content, not the content you already have.

Right, the watch history plugin (and I'm assuming top picks) did it this way because it's only way it could achieve it's objective.

What I'm getting at here is related to a feature request I submitted awhile back:

 @Luke I'm hoping you can update the server to add the date/time stamps rather than relying on a plug-in so the option to view watched history are more sufficiently integrated into the apps.
