AV1 Video causes device to reboot

Hi, I'm having an issue where playing any AV1 encoded video on the Android client causes the device to reboot. The server tries to direct play the file. Opening the the same file in VLC or MPV on the same device, it works as intended. If the video is transcoded it, it works fine.

Looking in /Android/data/com.mb.android/files, there are no logs for me to provide, so I have attached the server log. However, it looks like the server believes it to be playing fine.

  • Android version: 13
  • Emby App: 3.2.92
  • Emby Server: 4.7.11.0

Any ideas what I could do? Anyway to force Emby to always transcode AV1? Maybe remove it from the device's list of supported codecs?

Hi, we'll take a look at it. Thanks for reporting.

After seeing your response, I tried to make some test files to try help narrow the issue. However the issue is no longer happening. Tested with both 8 and10 bit AV1 files.

Emby versions are the same still. The only difference I can find is a android security patch on February 5th which seems to patch a race condition in a video buffer.  My issue may have been an edge case somewhere.

Still weird that only Emby was triggering it and seemed to happen with any AV1 file, but seems to be working fine now.
