HawkXP71 112 Posted January 18, 2023 Posted January 18, 2023 Currently, if I know Im on mobile, I can rely on the auto determine what quality, which works great most of the time. However, I have found in general, when on mobile and the quality fluctuates, its easier to just stream at the lower quality the whole time, especially when I start it in a high quality signal location. So to remedy this, I will do a "Convert" of the media, and place it in the original media folder. Then wait until it shows up as a separate version. All is well and good. However, I think an easier flow might be to have a pull down to the right of the "version" Version would contain the currently existing versions, but a "Force play as" (Im no marketing guy so better verbiage is probably desired). But in there it would have a set of pre-defined streaming qualities (set in the settings), then a user could simply click, "mobile" and it would do the same as convert, place in the correct location, and play it. Of course streaming it while converting would be best. TIA Hawk
Luke 42085 Posted January 18, 2023 Posted January 18, 2023 Hi, so essentially you want to save the transcoded output? Yes this idea has come up before, although it's not that simple because the output will vary depending on what app is playing and user audio/subtitle selections, whereas the conversion feature is a generalized conversion process.

No. I want to have an easy pull down from the videos page, to not just select the "version" but to select the "play quality", which would use pre-setup quality profiles (just like the convert page has) that could be selected. If the transcoded file already existed for the given conversion settings, just stream it. Otherwise transcode it and save it to the directory for next time.
Luke 42085 Posted January 18, 2023 Posted January 18, 2023 Quote for next time. Right but for next time for who? Just that one user on that same device?

I see this in a similar fashion to the Quality menu item under settings on YouTube. The Default is "Auto" but it also has the other known qualities that it can stream as well. 1
