csimon 4 Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 I have a PC with an Intel Ivy Bridge processor containing HD 4000 graphics and Emby correctly gives me hardware encode/decode options of "VAAPI IvyBridge GT2 HD Graphics 4000". At some stage, I'd like to get a more modern PC to run Emby server and I'm wondering what my hardware acceleration options would be then. I've read the transcoding notes at https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44001160207-hardware-acceleration-on-linux and there is a link to "Video Acceleration API Intel Video and Audio for Linux" at https://01.org/vaapi but this returns Access Denied. Looking round that site, I can't find anything on VAAPI but the home page says "Welcome to the new, redesigned Intel® Graphics for Linux site!". There is a section for "Intel Graphics for Linux" at https://01.org/linuxgraphics, I don't know if this is the same thing as VAAPI but it says "Because these drivers are integrated into all popular Linux distributions, you can trust that your Linux system will deliver stunning, high quality graphics without needing additional hardware or extra driver software." and also "As the only industry-certified fully open source graphics driver, Intel's graphics drivers are already integrated into all popular Linux distributions, which means you’ll get the latest advancements without ever needing to install a separate driver." However, on Intel's site at https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/developer/articles/technical/linuxmedia-vaapi.html, it suggests that VAAPI is only supported up to 4th Gen core, and specifically not Iris Xe graphics which is what the processor I was thinking of getting has. So I'm confused...VAAPI seems to be obsolete, although "Intel Graphics for Linux" drivers (its successor??) apparently are built-in to most Linuxes. Basically, if I got an processor with Iris Xe graphics, would Emby spot it correctly and provide hardware acceleration, or is there anything else I should do to enable it? Is VAAPI still very much alive but not called that now? Or do I have to install the Intel Media SDK for QuickSync??
Solution tmm1 8 Posted January 10, 2023 Solution Posted January 10, 2023 VAAPI is alive and well. Intel's website incorrect and out of date. https://github.com/intel/libva
