With the exception of a couple OSes, I wish every customer who is past the "newb" stage would run the beta,
as a 2nd instance used for testing.

Steps to Run a Second Emby Server Instance:

  1. Download: Download the portable Emby Server ZIP file: https://emby.media/download

  2. Extract: Extract the ZIP file to C:\EmbyPortable.

  3. Shutdown Existing Server: Safely shut down your existing Emby Server instance.

  4. Start Portable Version:

    • Navigate to the C:\EmbyPortable folder.
    • Double-click EmbyServer.exe to launch the second Emby Server instance.
  5. Login: Log in to the portable Emby server using your newly created admin credentials.

  6. Port Change: Navigate to the "Network" settings in the Emby web interface for the portable server.

    • Change the Local & Public HTTP ports (non-secure) to 8097.
    • Change the Local & Public HTTPS ports (secure) to 8921.
  7. Restart Portable Server: Save the changes and then restart the portable Emby Server instance.

  8. Restart Production Server: Once the portable server is back online, restart your existing production Emby Server instance.

You can run multiple servers this way on the same computer. Use the portable version to run the beta!

I currently run beta and currently don't use Emby for LiveTV since I no longer have CableCARD tuners due to cost.

Nevertheless, how to change my existing server to stable and rollthe beta when TVNext is available?

The present beta will end with 4.9 becoming stable.  At that point switch to the stable release for updating, and make a separate install of the next beta which will be the one in which TVnext will be revealed.

Hi everyone, just to give you a response, yes this will be coming. Stay tuned in the coming months for more information. Currently our focus right now is continued support of the new 4.8 server release, as well as the new Windows app that is imminent. Following that we will be focused on a short 4.9 release to try break away from our history of long releases. Once we get through that, then you can expect things to speed up related to this. Thanks guys.

@LukeIt's been one year and a week since you posted the above. We've made it through 4.8 and 4.9 is up to 4.9.42 (not what I'd call a short beta), so we're still waiting for "things to speed up". What's the latest on TVNext being included in a beta?

Hi.  Nothing has changed.  It will be after the 4.9 release.

Wow, that's a mastery of stating the obvious! Let me state my question in another way to which you may be able to give relevant information. Is there an estimated time period that 4.9 will be released?

I dunno if that is the right question, really.  When 4.9 releases may not be so relevant (maybe we can assume it is near in Emby years).  We really need an estimate on when the update after 4.9 is dropped.  Another a year after 4.9????

my only tiny ray of hope is that my read (and I'm far and away the least technically proficient here) on the recent 4.9 releases have been relatively minor updates so maybe, possibly, hopefully, 4.9 stable is somewhere, possibly, maybe, hopefully around the corner.  And to be clear its a teany tiny ray of hope.  If anything, I think we have all learned that we should take posts on timing from Emby folks with a grain of salt.

Whoever runs the show here seems to operate on God time where a 1000 years to us is one day to them except the real God has better customer service and prayers actually work.

More like a whole box of salt and then that is being optimistic.  They broke the current Live TV last year worse than it was before in February and it still hasn't been fixed.

My Live TV works fine, what is broken for you?  What isn't working?

I am not Ronstang, but watching in-progress recordings is very problematic.

That is just one of the problems.  I ran out of patience to list the problems years ago.  Would love TVNext but by the time it drops I won't need it since I am about to bail on cable TV, just too expensive for nothing but garbage repeat content and emby doesn't work well enough for me to just dump my cable TV equipment and save a bunch of money a month.  I bought emby Premiere 5 and a half years ago because I was told by people inside the emby team that TVNext was a few months out.  I have wasted a ton of money continuing to rent cable TV equipment because emby Live TV just is not reliable enough for a whole house solution as is and the powers that be at emby don't seem to have a clue how to run a business.

That's an odd comment since no one is forcing you to use Emby for PVR or rent cable, you must have chosen to continue to use Emby for other reasons.  It also remains to be seen when or if TVNext will be better or more reliable than current alternatives.

Speaking of which, the first post in this thread was made on Jan 5, 2023. I have to assume it's dead, there really isn't any other reason that I can think of.  Can anyone in the know please confirm or deny and lock this thread if it is dead?

Watching and recording cable TV in Emby has worked well for nearly everyone I chat with. Pretty much the same for OTA.  It's just a matter of having the right hardware (e.g. Prime & QUATRO) and server with HW Transcoding and NVMe used for recording and transcoding temp storage.

The NVMe storage is key to high IOPS o storage doesn't become a bottleneck if your recording multiple programs with users watching multiple channels and needing transcoding or remuxing.

This assumes each client has a good connection to the server preferably using Ethernet vs Wifi.

As one of the original testers of the most excellent tvnext created by @softworkzi can't tell you how bitterly disappointing it is that all the work that was done on it, what 4-5 years ago has STILL not been integrated in to emby yet!!!

As I understood it it was possible to integrate it with a --tvnext command line switch so it could be optionally tested with minimal extra code required.

Why have you let all that excellent work go to waste @Lukeyou should be ashamed.

It is very disappointing that this hasn’t been implemented and it is the sole reason why I don’t recommend Emby to anyone live tv is so slow if fast switching was implemented everyone from the greenbutton forum would be using emby a huge potential was lost to channels and other competitors

What competitor do you recommend that does everything emby does? @denz

I've written and rewritten this post a dozen times trying to make it not seem hostile.  But in the end facts are facts.  We've have at least three (four?) beta cycles since the first teaser post about the new(potential) LiveTV subsystem, and I cannot think of a single major new feature/improvement that I was waiting on or even noticed.

DB optimization?  Needed and worthwhile
FFMPEG updates? Needed and worthwhile
.NET updates? Needed and worthwhile

But do any of those make me want to 'sell' emby to friends or family?  Nope.  I have largely given up on using Emby as a DVR, but still using it for watching the news and other media.  I had hoped for better schedule/event tracking with the new version so I could have faith that a recording would occur, or be rescheduled if missed.  But now I just don't bother.

The thing they all have plus and minuses I currently swap between channels dvr and emby. I am disappointed that I had to pay channels dvr for annual subscription I would have rather paid it to emby and I would buy another membership if the fast channel change gets introduced but there isn’t anything to say I want to contribute more to it. Being honest If emby came out you have to pay monthly I would say goodbye to it. Current emby is ok but not great and I just can’t recommend it with such slow live tv channel change.

Channels DVR is pretty much the gold standard when it comes to live TV and DVR capabilities. Plex's live TV offerings are also a lot better than Emby's, though their new app is a bit of a mess so I can't say what it will be like once it comes to more devices. Those are just the two I'm familiar with but I know there are a few others as well that seem to handle most everything better than Emby.
