It's been a while seen I've seen anything on TVNext... are there any updates?

Hi.  The same as we said before.  It will be after 4.9 which has not yet released.

4.9 apparently being the Smartlists edition of which we've seen precisely nothing how many months after the last stable release ?

The determination to make 4.9 a less protracted beta seems to have faltered somewhat...

Faltering on releases is standard operation around here, thinking otherwise is futile.

I believe the correct phrase is ' Resistance is futile'. See Doctor Who, the Borg...

If 4.9 is taking this long, then you can imagine how long >4.9 will take (ebr didn't say how many releases after 4.9!).  So just forget about it and be content.  😄

Be content ? Seriously ? You just can't go round saying things like that. Where would the world be if everyone was just content. Imagine if V. Putin was just content with Russia's existing borders, imagine if J. Bezos was just content with being just a millionaire and actually used the rest to pay all those employees a bit more...Anarchy I tell you, anarchy.

Well, I say that just so you won't keep stressing over something that may not happen in your lifetime.  😀  Pretend there is 'next' TV and enjoy what you have now, since that is all there is ...

That would be nice, but it doesn't work properly so I still have to have a cable box which I have been paying for the privilege to keep for the last 4 years waiting for emby to actually work correctly for live TV.  Emby continues to eat up my hard drive until the OS crashes because of live TV, it truncates my recordings at random times, things that were scheduled to be recorded somehow just become unscheduled by themselves and I miss key recordings....too much to list.

Good thing we complained about the lack of progress 2 years ago.  It really sped them up...

If it wasn't for softworkz giving some insights here and there, we would be clueless.
Not so frequent in the forum anymore but communication is still horrible, unfortunately. 😕

4.2 Years and counting.....what a great "thank you" for paying premiere users.

Still waiting for this to happen, it’s the one reason I haven’t fully switched over from Kodi yet. I just use Emby as the DB.

Progress on releasing 4.9 is the measure; we have been assured that the following beta cycle will include TVNext.

I can’t speak for anyone else but the m3u tuner plugin update 1.0.38 which auto installed a few days ago has made live tv work a lot better.  Pretty much flawless for me. On multiple iptv providers. I know it doesn’t address this thread but it feels like love tv progress is being made.

What history has learned us is that progress that you talk about will last until next beta release

  • The beta for 4.9.0.X will soon be 1 year old
  • Yet the main request/promise (SMART PLAYLISTS) is not in the beta yet!

if tvnext ever arrives, will it have the feature to setup backup channels for IPTV? So if one channel won't play, automatically use another channel specified by user?
Threadfin and Streammaster have this feature.

Thanks

Threadfin and Streammaster have this feature.

It already starts when you add a new tuner (M3U=tuner as well). After the channel scan (or -selection for M3U), you are asked whether you want to create separate channels or merge with existing channels. In case of the latter, it tries to match new channels to existing channels by certain criteria and then you get a chance for drag-drop editing the matching where you automatically get possible match suggestions and you can change everything to your liking of course.

Of course you can at any time split or merge channels and their sources.

Tuners are modeled as devices with one or more 'nodes' - which means HF-demodulator for native tuners, means an HDHR Quatro is tuner with 4 nodes (e.g. tunerA). For M3U, if you have an account with 6 simultaneous streams, it will be one tuner with 6 nodes (e.g. tunerB).

You can not only merge multiple devices, you can also split a channel from a single tuner and have one of them driven by node1 and the other channel by node2,3,4 - which is one way to reserve tuner resources for certain purposes (e.g. for yourself or for recording).

When you merge channels from multiple tuners, you can again define which nodes of which tuner you want to assign - for example tunerA-node1,2 and tunerB-node1-4.
Then you you can reorder those nodes to define in which priority these should be used - e.g. in case of your "backup channel" scenario, you would put the tunerA-nodes first and the tunerB-nodes afterwards.

The tuners are then always tried in that order - unless you have configured permissions. You can restrict access to certain tuner nodes to specific users, so when a user has no permission for a node, it won't be used and go to the next one in that order.

Trying is actually not the right word. TVnext doesn't try - it "knows". At any point in time, it knows exactly which tuners/nodes are currently in use. For hardware tuners it even knows when they are used by a different software or when they are disconnected.
Not trying means fast channel startup and switching. And more..
