All I can say is that it will be either yes or no - but nothing half-way. No matter how the outcome - at this point I want to say a big thanks to all of you for your interest and for supporting this. Thanks to all the testers who participated in the initial beta for all your work and effort in helping this to become a successfull parrt of Emby. Also thanks to all the nice and friendly users and community members, moderators, admins and fellow developers who I've had the chance to work with and talk to so far, during the past few years! Best wishes, softworkz That sounds like a leaving speech Not good as from what I've seen Softworkz and SamES do the actual coding work! Not feeling that positive as it shouldn't have had this much grief for something that so overdue. Makes me wonder where Emby is going now.... 1 2

arrbee99 1815 Posted March 5, 2024 Posted March 5, 2024 OTOH, softworkz does say 'had the chance to work with and talk to so far', so I live in hope. 1
pwhodges 2012 Posted March 5, 2024 Posted March 5, 2024 Could the other devs really be considering actually junking a working development with the number of advantages we've been told about (notably, to my mind, a greatly expanded range of directly supported devices)? That would be concerning as an indication of their judgement. I hope if they do reject it, they are prepared to stand up and give solid reasons, but I fear that would not be entirely in character... arrbee99 1815 Posted March 5, 2024 Posted March 5, 2024 I still struggle to think of any reason to justify getting Emby over its competition to others who might ask as I can't see any big selling point for it. IMHO this feature could be that point. Hope it doesn't get thrown away. 1 5
emveepee 132 Posted March 5, 2024 Posted March 5, 2024 I too read it as a leaving speech for softworx, (maybe contract over end of Feb?) but I also read that "in helping this to become a successfull parrt of Emby." thinking it was going forward without him. If so that would be a big mistake. Martin 1

pschweig 6 Posted March 6, 2024 Posted March 6, 2024 I'm really hoping this gets implemented. Emby desperately needs this to improve its live tv functionality. To say I'm currently finding it flaky would be an understatement. 1
justinrh 260 Posted March 7, 2024 Posted March 7, 2024 I'm wondering why Emby would choose to not implement it. What was all the time and effort for?

I mean, far as I can tell, the object behind the new Android app is to replace two apps with one (?) so as to reduce the need for support. While its not guaranteed I'd have thought Emby would leap at a chance to reduce support for 'No compatible streams are currently available. Please try again later or contact your system administrator for details.' I get more and more, and there seem to be plenty of similar ones popping up here in posts as well.
TMCsw 248 Posted March 8, 2024 Posted March 8, 2024 JPTFB (Just Push The F[reaking] Button...(I used to use a utility named this...)) as SWZ said earlier... As I said before I'm willing to test this in a WindowsX VM until it is considered stable enough to work on a better OS (bet it already is...)

If you think adding a new server for each of the platforms that Emby runs on and configuring all those new tuners reduces short term and long term support you are dreaming. Migration alone for the existing users will be interesting. Edited March 8, 2024 by emveepee 1

How much motivation does Emby have to support users with lifetime subscriptions? For me the argument would be would the number of new customers justify the added life cycle cos? If it was easy Jellyfin's Live TV would be a lot better. Perhaps unfortunate but IPTV probably doesn't need TVNext as much as some tuner devices and the reality is linear tuner based TV is dying and most new users seem to come because of IPTV. H/W tuner development pretty much dried up after Windows 7/WMC stopped. Emby won't be able to compete for the US market after DRM and even in the UK they were talking about killing DVB in 2030. That has since been exteded, but who knows what will happen around the world. For the home legitimate DVR user things are pretty bleak. Martin
arrbee99 1815 Posted March 8, 2024 Posted March 8, 2024 I know nowt about running a business (or how difficult it is too add this kind of stuff to many different systems), but I believe one of the concepts is something along the lines of - if you're not improving the product, you're actually going backwards (cause everybody else is improving theirs).

Luke 42077 Posted March 9, 2024 Posted March 9, 2024 Hi everyone, just to give you a response, yes this will be coming. Stay tuned in the coming months for more information. Currently our focus right now is continued support of the new 4.8 server release, as well as the new Windows app that is imminent. Following that we will be focused on a short 4.9 release to try break away from our history of long releases. Once we get through that, then you can expect things to speed up related to this. Thanks guys. 8 2 8

Thanks guys. Thanks for the detailed response @Luke. Clearly we are all pretty keen for this to be implemented, so excellent news that it's a go ahead. I for one am eagerly waiting for this so I can finally off load WMC & ServerWMC. I'm hopeful that it won't be another year in waiting. Cheers Chris 1
badous 17 Posted March 9, 2024 Posted March 9, 2024 Looks like when @softworkzpredicted that because TvNext was going to be such a leap forward that the server version had to start with 5.X, he was right.

unisoft 352 Posted March 11, 2024 Posted March 11, 2024 (edited) I'm wondering if because this is a major change, i.e. 5.x server wise, if the Emby stakeholders want to charge another lifetime membership for it. Personally, I don't mind BUT I would want to see some other stuff done/fixed like ability to customise the top menu options that people have asked for years, option to disable the stupid side menu in TV mode (plex menu as I call it), integrate the WMC work by Softworkz into the Android client at least, have inbuilt playlists as a default list, sort WAN speed detection on "Automatic" so it works properly and add cross fade capability for music. Also not charge more than today for feature pack add-on again which must be available as lifetime option. Having said that, existing lifetime customers could be argued as free upgrade as helped develop product with ideas and feedback and put up with some user impacting changes (whether deliberate or unintended) and just new customers who pay more for lifetime option....... Thanks guys. This is fantastic news Luke, and I am very excited as I have been waiting for this (not always patiently, sorry) for a long time. I have multiple server machines and a total of 5 Ceton cards which I cannot use all at once due to needing to run a proxy which limits one card to a machine. Since NextTV will support these cards natively I should be able to run multiple cards per machine, even though I don't really need them. So if you need someone dedicated to getting things right I would love to be part of the larger test group as I believe I could help you and would be willing to do all I can to help the project progress.
