justinrh 259 Posted December 24, 2022 Posted December 24, 2022 I downloaded the video from https://www.demolandia.net/downloads.html?id=86575423. Emby doesn't transcode, but it plays at 1080p. Why is this? MediaInfo 4ktest.txtembyserver-4ktest.txt Vizio TV M50QXM-K01

justinrh 259 Posted December 25, 2022 Author Posted December 25, 2022 Sorry - forgot to mention that Emby nerd stats says 1080 and the TV's stat's says 1080.
ebr 16169 Posted December 26, 2022 Posted December 26, 2022 19 hours ago, justinrh said: Emby nerd stats says 1080 That is likely just reporting the UI resolution - which is always at 1080. 19 hours ago, justinrh said: the TV's stat's says 1080 Exactly where? Have you put your TV/the Android device in 2160 mode?
Luke 42077 Posted December 26, 2022 Posted December 26, 2022 Hi. Can you try sideloading our standard android app on the same device and see how that compares? https://emby.media/emby-for-android.html Thanks.

What is the point of that? Why doesn't the UI use 2160? 23 hours ago, ebr said: Exactly where? Have you put your TV/the Android device in 2160 mode? TV settings > admin > system info. I don't know how to put the Shield in 2160 mode - shouldn't it be in 2160 mode by default? I also don't know how to put the TV 1in 2160 mode - it is always in 2160 mode AFAIK.

You set it there. 1 minute ago, justinrh said: What!? What is the point of that? Why doesn't the UI use 2160? Because none of the platforms I am aware of render their graphic elements any higher than 1080 at this time.

ebr 16169 Posted December 27, 2022 Posted December 27, 2022 The item is direct playing so it isn't being converted down by the server. You bring up the info screen for the TV itself during playback and it reports it is in 1080 mode?
justinrh 259 Posted December 27, 2022 Author Posted December 27, 2022 (edited) Yes. For a test, I played a 720p video and the TV reported 2160 (which is what I expect). A mystery indeed. To add to the confusion, I played the 4k file on my Shield+1080p TV. Results: 1) The colors where all messed up! 2) It did not transcode! How did it play at 1080p and not transcode? justinrh 259 Posted December 29, 2022 Author Posted December 29, 2022 So how can I know if the 4k file is indeed playing at 4k on my 4k TV? (If I can't trust the TV reporting, that is.)
ebr 16169 Posted December 29, 2022 Posted December 29, 2022 14 hours ago, justinrh said: If I can't trust the TV reporting I believe you can trust the TV display. What you can't always trust is the stats display in Emby because we get that value from the system and some systems report the UI resolution instead of the video one. Can you show us a screen shot of your TV/Android display setting?
justinrh 259 Posted December 29, 2022 Author Posted December 29, 2022 Ah-ha! For some reason the Shield is downgrading to 1080. Why? Because I had set in Emby to match refresh rate. But why did Emby force the change when the media and the Shield are set to 60Hz?
ebr 16169 Posted December 30, 2022 Posted December 30, 2022 According to your last screen shot there, you have the display set to 1080.
justinrh 259 Posted December 30, 2022 Author Posted December 30, 2022 I know that. You missed the text below all the pictures.
ebr 16169 Posted December 30, 2022 Posted December 30, 2022 Hi. I didn't miss that text. If you set it to match refresh rate but not resolution, then it will keep the resolution you have set in the settings - which is 1080 according to your screen shot.
justinrh 259 Posted December 30, 2022 Author Posted December 30, 2022 (edited) But you must have forgotten that the "it [Shield] is set to 4k, 60, Dolby Vision, HDR10". Emby is forcing it to downgrade upon playing the video. Edited December 30, 2022 by justinrh

justinrh 259 Posted December 31, 2022 Author Posted December 31, 2022 @ebr, I told you the Shield is set for 4k (see above when you asked). Only during play of the video does it say 1080.

justinrh 259 Posted January 2, 2023 Author Posted January 2, 2023 (edited) @ebr please listen to me. I am not lying. Boot Shield and it is set to 4k. I play the video and check the current (runtime) setting and it is 1080. Stop the video and it is back to 4k. What about "I told you the Shield is set for 4k (see above when you asked). Only during play of the video does it say 1080." is not understandable? Edited January 2, 2023 by justinrh don't mean to sound rude
Mnejing 23 Posted January 2, 2023 Posted January 2, 2023 (edited) Your Shield and your TV are not the same device. Your Shield may be correctly trying to display at 4k, but if your physical TV is set to 1080p, it doesn't matter what your shield is doing. The point ebr is trying to make to you is that everything else in your setup is 4k, but the last device in your chain, your physical TV, is set to 1080p at 120hz. It probably has multiple modes. I don't doubt that your TV is 4k capable, but if it's resolution is set to 1080p120, of course your Shield is going to not give you a 4k stream. Your Emby is, by the images you posted, not transcoding anything. The screenshot literally shows Emby directplaying your audio and video streams. The issue is not between Emby and your Shield, but between your Shield and your TV. Edited January 2, 2023 by Mnejing
justinrh 259 Posted January 2, 2023 Author Posted January 2, 2023 (edited) But only if Emby has 'match refresh rate' on. So, maybe that magic that Emby is doing is confusing the hardware?? Yeah, it looks the Shield is doing the downgrading (not Emby transcoding, which I never said it did). So why would the Shield react this way to what Emby is doing? (I have no way to set the TV to a certain resolution.) Edited January 2, 2023 by justinrh

Is it turned on?
