Duplicate Artist

Hey There,

metadata of audiofiles is a mess, sometimes the artists are english, sometimes they are german.

e.g. "Goerge Frideric Handel" and "Georg Friedrich Händel", but it gets worse when its about Orchestras and their location description:
If the song is german but the orchestra is english then it might be "Londoner Symphonie Orchester" or "London Symphony Orchestra"

Is it possible to connect these artists in emby and tell emby to treat those as 1 Artist, that would be great!

hi @Charliexyx what does the embedded information within the audio files look like? How are they tagged?

Posted

I am sure somewhere in the duplicate there is a space or some character that is unique to the first one.

I used to had 1 or 2 in my library also, when I fixed the metadata on the MP3 it joined.

@Luke They are tagged as described in my post. So yes they are different. If it would be possible to "combine" different namings within Emby, it would be a lot easier to work with the tags.

There is a way to have it handled automatically, which is to have the tracks tagged with the same musicbrainz artist ids. This will join the artists even if the artist tag name differs.

I can not confirm:

I have tchaikovsky multiple times:

when I edit them, they have identical ID:

But the content shown on their page is not the same but unique to their specific spelled occurrence:

Is it possible to merge those pages so that both show the links of both? Or merge them otherwise?

Hi there, what you have shown is the MusicBrainz Artist IDs on the Emby Artist pages.

I think Luke is asking you to check the embedded metadata of your audio files on the underlying tracks/songs.

A good way to do this is using another application such as Picard or Mp3tag. Do you use a music tagging program like this?

Then rescan your library and see what is imported back into Emby at a track level.

Perhaps you could try that and then report back with further info.

Cheers!

P. S. AFAIK Emby doesn't currently have a "Merge" function

How would I set music brainz ID with MP3 Tag? I use Mp3Tag, but I always input the data manually and edit the fields one by one. Am I doing it wrong? Is there some special function to set it automatically? And which Tag should be filled?

To "scan my library" sounds like an automatism...

I also use Mp3tag and do a lot of manual editing, but there is also much you can potentially do automatically.

I am not an expert with Musicbrainz importing into Mp3tag and then Emby - but here are some hints to get you started...

With Mp3tag there is a Tag Sources menu item:

image.png.13ef23582d1ce51c181fc46456fd2211.png

After you have selected MusicBrainz, you are asked to confirm your search:

image.png.33110077274accf65293a300003cc706.png

You then get a list to select the best match:

image.png.9236a7d6d7ba584b0a423453f5713040.png

You then get all the info from MusicBrainz to potentially import into Mp3tag (including the relevant IDs):

As Luke previously mentioned Artist ID, then that may be the MusicBrainz ID you need? (I am not 100% certain here - needs someone else more knowledgeable to comment on MusicBrainzIDs > Mp3tag > Emby importing)

Anyway, hopefully that will get you started with some possibilities to try...

(There's also several ways to easily bulk edit in MP3tag - but that's another whole topic...)

Just thinking about this a bit more... another option for you...

If all of the relevant Artist IDs have already been imported into the Emby Artist field (as per your previous example images), but are not in your Emby Songs, then you could just use Mp3tag to copy that ID into all of the relevant tracks in bulk and thus bypass the MusicBrainz importing altogether.

In Mp3tag:

  • Use: File>Options>Tag Panel>Add Field>Edit Field>MUSICBRAINZ_ARTISTID to set up a MusicBrainz Artist ID field in your Tag Panel

image.png.e4a3d696cbdf87f154c08544769f6d91.png

  • Open and select all relevant Albums/Tracks that require the Artist ID to be added
  • Copy the Artist ID from Emby and paste into Mp3tag
  • Rescan the relevant folders in Emby to import back into Emby

There are probably other ways as well? Good luck with whichever way you try!

well, looks like I have used it kinda wrong all along^^

I manually looked the CDs up on discogs and manually typed the data in the mp3Tag fields

so this is a bit faster.

also musicbrainz has good quality for the covers. I was manually duckduckgoing for them which also took a lot of time.

Artists require the same name in order to be merged. Initially they would merge on musicbrainz id's, but after feedback from @ginjaninjaand @Vicpathis was changed because sometimes the artist might be XXX feat.  YYY and users want that information preserved.

Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.

Hey Luke,

I think I understood, that if two different tracks share the same musicbranz artist ID they may create only 1 Artist entry in Emby,
but in fact this does not help, because most of the music i'm managing in my Library is not available on musicBrainz. The most albums are only available on discogs.

The reason why I want to merge the artists is, that I would like to see a shared List of "Songs" "Erscheint auf"(Albums) and "Mehr davon"(more like this). If there would be a feature or plugin to enrich these categories with the information of similar Artists (Artists with same discogsID or musicBrainzID) then I would be totally satisfied. But as it is right now it is a bit sad if you are looking for that one album from tchaikovsky but you have to click and check every tchaikovsky artist to find it.

Do you think this could be possible?

Best wishes,

Charlie

Currently only musicbrainz id's are used for this. It does make sense to also support using discogs ids.
