Chromecast for Google TV issues

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I'm having problems with playback using the Chromecast fo LR Google TV (4k version). I know I had it working in the past but now it stutters with TrueHD or AC3. The files are mkv rips. The DTS is better because it seems to transcode.

If I force transcode by lowering bitrate to like 10Mb/s it plays smoothly. I'd rather not transcode though. I'm on 1GB lan and even added Ethernet to the Chromecast with no success.

I have tried with it without passthrough on audio settings. This feeds into an RX-3070 receiver.

Playing through Emby Theater has zero issues.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Using VLC as external player stops stutter using OpenSL ES and the and Hardware acceleration set to Decoding acceleration. Unfortunately it shows up as PCM on my receiver and not TRUEHD.

Full acceleration results in the stutter.

It is very funny i have the same creepy playback on my Brand best seller new Google android tv Chromecast. Every exact 2 second the player just hangs for a half second And then resume at even 1080 full blu-ray bitrates on a 1gb fiber FTTH connection.

Stream Blu-Ray to hls

Video h264 Direct play

Audio AC3 direct play

What Is more funny is the very old Chromecast ultra 4k which has not android Inside can stream with no issues. Seems that the Google tv playstore has a retarded emby app.

Update : even the last classic android apk installed manualy by send files to tv app instead of Google tv official apk. Same playback. The Chromecast 4k with android tv Is the worst emby app that i have ever tested since i use emby for years now.

Newer Is better ? I doubt

It's possible that the bitrate is just too high for the network connection to keep up with.

i do not think so, speed test on this wifi chromecast goes up to 250 mbps.

for exemple a 4k hevc mkv file (remux) (with bitrate around 100 mbps) instead of simple bluray folder plays perfectly on the same device (a google tv 4k chromecast dongle behind this tv).

it really seams there is a problem only on h264 1080p bluray folder around 35 mbps.

I have a similar issue with Chromecast With Android TV 4k and MKV Stream.
Direct Play 31 mbs stutters horribly on the Chromecast. If I transcoder it, it works fine.
It also does not stutter when I do Direct Play on my Pixel 7 (same Wifi) or if I cast it to my Chromecast Ultra 4k.

Are you using only the TV speakers?  Have you tried setting the audio to "Mix down to stereo"?

Sorry I should have mentioned that. I play the audi via a Sony soundbar. I will try the mix down to stereo option.

@Lukeit is confirmed technically Google Chromecast 4k with Google Tv android Is technically a crap device when using codec h264 with biterate around 35 mbps in 1080p. The playback Is horrible And struggling. This does not occur with h265  codec with high Speed rate around 100 mb. Maybe the New Google tv Chromecast with android tv uses a weak chip for h264 and another chip for h265.

Technically the old Google Chromecast 4k without android is still the best. IT Can play both h264 or h265 vids at very high bitrates. I mean the Chromecast ultra Black model.

I highly recommend users not to use new Google Chromecast with android tv. This device is too weak for h264 1080p vidéos.

Do not sell your old Chromecasts without android because they are a lot more efficient ať high bitrates

Google engineers have created the worse Chromecasts ever.

Old Chromecast ultra are still a lot better than the New one Models with android tv.

I was planning to replace my Mibox 4 with a GCCTV 4k, but after have read about the stuttering issues here I might go for the HD version, which I know works well. I don't have any 4k videos anyway (yet).

Now, since I have an AVR that is capable of decoding most audio formats, I'm wondering how the 4k version performs with direct streaming and audio passthrough? Does the video still stutter?

It Is highly possible that the New HD version of Google tv Chromecast has the same chip. So you might have struggling issues on 1080p h264 vids that have a higher bitrates than 24 megabit per sec.

The old Chromecast 3 or the Chromecast ultra are not struggling ať all.

I have the exact same problem with the same device. It happens to all Bluray rips I create using MakeMKV. The wifi is not the problem, and x265 works like a charm.

I cannot find anywhere that publishes this level of specs anymore but it would not be surprising at all if the device wasn't designed to support h.264 above 20-30mb/s since that is the highest bitrate that would ever be provided by a streaming service.  h.265 would be able to support higher bitrates.

Makemkv mkvtoolnix whatever Tool you use Google Sabrina seems to have issues with h264 files above 24 mb/s. The mad thing Is that older Chromecast ultra without android with less ram Can play full bitrates bluray rips... "Google tv Chromecast Sabrina" hardware just suck

Did you try today’s chrome cast firmware update?

I tired googling what you said, and what I found was this thread, 🤣.

This problem started for me when my Chromecast TV 4k was updated to Android 12 and/or a new Emby client version. There were no problems before this.
