Playing files directly from network share - Shield TV

I had this working before on my Shield TV but cannot get it to work now.  I have mounted the network share in the Shield's Storage settings and have the appropriate network shared location set in the Library folder settings.  But it always uses http for the streaming type instead of file.  Has something changed such that this is no longer possible on the Shield?

It's disabled automatically if on SE9 now.  SE9 implemented some security features with Android 11 which required the app to be given extra permissions for DFA to work.  When the devs submitted the app Google wanted to slap a warning on the app which would have scared people away.  So, now they disable the option if running Android 11+.

You could fall back (a few of us have done this), but it's not for the faint of heart and the little benefit may not be worth the risk of bricking your Shield.  It was exciting though :)

I'm still on SE8 for this reason - but agree with the above view - HTTP delivery works perfectly well and unless you have a specific reason why you need SMB/Direct File Access - then it is (now) not worth the risk to rollback your Shield just to get it.

And if one does roll back, there is no guarantee that DFA will even work. I tried this with 2 2019 shield pro even diligently comparing all settlings both shield and nas with @FrostByte all to no avail.
