Sideloaded standard app has the same issue

Done. I played a bit of the episode from the user Evil_Crab and sent logs from the Android TV app a couple of minutes ago.

Are these internal or external subs?  Something is out of spec or at least unexpected about them:

Those are internal subs. I'm not sure if they are according to spec, but they play fine in Kodi on Nvidia Shield and Emby Theater on Windows

These subs are also available separately

If you add them as external, do they work properly?

When added as external they seem to work, but it seems that they are using default font in that case and are quite laggy in the moments with heavy styling (e.g. lyrics during the opening).

I also tested mpv on the Android TV and it displays subtitles correctly
