Unable to start playback

I am trying to watch some videos on our Roku TV. When you hit play it tries to start then just goes on to the next episodes. It does this for any episode.

Playback works fine on other devices such as tablet / phone with Emby app.

Is the log I attached not from the app?

Inside the Roku application settings inside "Advanced" you will find the option. Enable it. Once enabled you must exit and restart the application for it to produce the "Send Log" option on the homescreen correctly.

Once you restart the application it will appear as the option to "Send Log" under your user options.

When you send the log via the Roku application it connects directly to the Emby central debug server to store your Log.

You need to also tell us the "Username" of the user logged in at the time you sent the log and the time in ET ( Eastern Time/USA, GMT -5 ) you sent the log and that should be enough. Thank you. :)

Hi.  How were these episodes created?  Something about their structure is making the Roku player think they are finished.  We've seen this sometimes on Roku with incorrectly muxed items.

Recorded and then dropped in the folder. I have deleted the files, re-recorded them and added them back a few times. I also tried changing the file names.

Recorded via Emby?  What format?

Posted

Just by screen capture to MKV. However this happens with downloaded content too.

The files play just fine via Emby on my phone, tablet and laptop. For some reason the Roku TV is having the issue.

Yes, the Roku player is finicky about file structure.  However these are being recorded isn't meeting a spec or at least what Roku expects.  Probably related to the indexing of the length of the item because the player thinks it is finished before it even starts.

Can you try re-muxing one of these with mkvtoolnix?

Interesting. Is that something new that has been observed? I haven't had issues like this in all my years using Emby and thousands of playbacks with recorded or downloaded.
Let me remove all the recorded stuff and replace it with downloaded and see what happens.

No, we've seen this behavior on Roku for a while.

Here is a report from a couple of years ago:

Remuxing fixed it in that case (and in most cases I recall).  Have these recordings been altered after recording, like commercial removal?

Hm weird. I have been trying on our one Roku TV. I'll have to try it on the Roku 4k UHD unit.

This is also happening to me to with downloaded content. I am going to try and re-encode the content the roku is having an issue with but I would have thought the emby server should be encoding on the fly to something the roku can play so I am not following how the file format should matter.

Here is the file info for one of the files that won't play on roku

Hi. The issue in this thread wasn't the file format. It was that the files were not constructed properly for that format.

Your issue may or may not be the same thing. Have you tried remuxing one of the problem files?

Yes. It doesn't work on the Roku 4k Ultra either. I sent logs in.

Same issue:

*** Player state changed: buffering
*** Player state changed: finished
Playlist end reached

I wouldn't have expected a different result as the Roku player simply cannot deal with this content.  Have you tried remuxing it?

Yes, same issue.

So it's a bug with the Emby Roku player? Is there any plan to make it less "finicky"?

Hi.  No it is a problem with the media.  It is out of spec.  It isn't "our" player.  it is the player provided by Roku and they do not provide the ability to modify it.

Emby doesn't build or support the players on Rokus? Interesting and concerning.

So all Emby players don't work the same? The media plays fine on my tablet / phone / pc with those Emby players.
