johoja12 4 Posted November 3, 2022 Posted November 3, 2022 I have a library with TV content - with multiple folders, as new files are added/downloaded, and scanned into the library they show up. However the scheduled task that does the thumbnail extraction at night is skipping some files and not adding *.bif files for all content. Running the task again just completes in 0 seconds even though there is not a *.bif files in the folder for lots of content. I've set it to save the *.bif file in the media folder. Is there any known issue around this?
johoja12 4 Posted November 3, 2022 Author Posted November 3, 2022 Just an update -- after i did a full metadata refresh on that library , and then did the thumbnail extract it is starting to work on the missing ones. Seems like mabye it shouldn't need to have to do that though?
Luke 42078 Posted November 3, 2022 Posted November 3, 2022 Hi, most likely there was an error extracting thumbnails the first time, and the server remembers that and won't retry unless you refresh metadata. If you can get this to happen again on a new video then please capture the emby server log and we can take a closer look at what happened. Thanks.
johoja12 4 Posted November 4, 2022 Author Posted November 4, 2022 (edited) It has happened again - but i don't see any errors though. Attaching log files - missing bif for "/mnt/TVShows/TVShows_8/Station 19/Station 19 - S06E05 - Pick Up the Pieces WEBDL-1080p.mkv" The above file was scanned into the library 1-2 days ago, and still does not have any thumbnails - even when running the thumbnail extraction task manually. emby_logs.tar.gz Edited November 4, 2022 by johoja12
Luke 42078 Posted November 4, 2022 Posted November 4, 2022 Which log file is from when it was scanned in?

Luke 42078 Posted November 4, 2022 Posted November 4, 2022 When is it configured to extract in emby library setup?

johoja12 4 Posted November 11, 2022 Author Posted November 11, 2022 Any idea what it is @Luke - any other logs I can help with ?
Luke 42078 Posted November 13, 2022 Posted November 13, 2022 Right now I'm not sure of the reason yet. We're still investigating.

SDMattman 6 Posted November 19, 2022 Posted November 19, 2022 I have the same issue. I'm on v 4.7.8.0 running on Ubuntu server. Emby didn't have write access to the media folders, so it couldn't create the BIF files. I corrected the issue, re-scanned the media folder, and launched the scheduled thumbnail task. It didn't work. I have my thumbnail generation set to scheduled and when media is added. So far I've been able to work around the issue by using the touch command on the media. Emby thinks it's a new file and generates the thumbnails. This isn't ideal because it resets the timestamp of the media file. UPDATE mid-post After clicking refresh meta data in the web UI for a single TV series the thumbnail generation kicked off. I'm guessing there's a difference between the operations of Scheduled Tasks > Scan Media Library vs clicking on the three dots in the lower right corner of your media (from the web client) and clicking Refresh Metadata. I guess it's a bit confusing because the description of Scheduled Tasks > Scan Media Library says it scans your libraries and refreshes metadata. I hope this helps someone and doesn't just muddy the waters.

The server will not just keep trying again and again for the same file on every scan.
