What happens if Emby goes out of business?

That or the developer stops working on Emby ?

We all know good things come to a end sadly. :(

Not because of anything just because.

I believe we have been told that if Emby stops support for any reason they will send an update that allows full functionality without the app needing to connect to Emby itself.

What I would "worry" more about is what will happen to the parts of the app that requires connections to various services to get stuff like posters and metadata. Particularly what if Emby goes out of business and say "The TVDB" or any provider changes something or goes out of business itself.

With no updates to Emby happening it is possible that we could lose access to the companies that provide support data.

I actually think Emby going out of business is very unlikely but I guess it is possible.
I do have to say that I "think" I am pretty safe as it is most likely that things will remain pretty much as they are for at least several more years. Before things go so bad as to force Emby at of business I believe I will reach "end of life." That is I believe Emby will outlive me and that is pretty much all that concerns me.

The one concerning fact for me has nothing to do with actual Emby support. It is at least remotely possible that Emby could be sued under one of the various "laws" involving piracy prevention. It could be argued that by giving a way to play pirated material and get and display metadata for organization. It is a rather huge stretch to make that argument but there has already been some issues/questions that bring Emby's (and Plex's) position in the streaming universe into question.

I do not believe Emby is in danger from government watchdogs or private individuals as far as piracy or some such is concerned. But there have been successful lawsuits with a LOT less validity.

This is not something I lose sleep over but it is, at least slightly, a valid concern.
