Top Picks support thread

Top picks is very slow for me, i set items manually. It triggers a (full) library scan and the update top picks task which takes a long time

This was the only way @chefcould achieve that. I'm sure he thought of every possible solution.

Things could change in core to facilitate a better solution but until then "this is the way".  

At the moment with the stable release of Emby this is gold!  I love it even with it's duplication issues, which only surface with searches/recommended etc.

And luke has said not to do it, and these types of plugins have caused extra support for the emby team, and my guess is chef didnt know the issues when he created it, so why should he continue to support it if its not a recommended approach and causes issues for the emby support team?

Then he needs to provide a suitable way to do it ... 

It really is a beyond a basic requirement for a media interface - show a filtered list of media on the home screen.

I'm really not sure why it has been omitted for so long .. we keep getting 'promises' - the latest beta has a 'collections' row now (but no way to show the actual contents of a collection) and 'Recently Released' items (that don't show as duplicates) - so I guess it's 'possible' but what's the secret ? - I suspect it needs unique item types in the db.

The answer is the smart views/playlists feature when that happens. Then a plugin could just create one of those.

I dont want a playlist, and I assume I dont want a view, but since there is no info on what a view is, we want collections.

I dont disagree but its not my product, hence I just use plex, there are a bunch of issues that emby has when it comes to like DV/HDR with appleTV, these collections, not knowing whos using a premier license, there also isnt any formal time frames on things so I just check back every now and then but keep driving plex as it works better.  There is obviously a way to add recently added/released to the homescreen so it seems like there is some kind of mechanism for it, not sure why that couldnt be applied to collections or whatever the new item is even if just only in the API for now until the more enhanced feature set is rolled out.  Im not sure how they decide what features to add, it doesnt seem to be user feedback driven, it also wouldnt surprise me if the devs said yeah we dont even use emby on the daily, we tend to just use netflix or xxx streaming service.  Many game dev/designers dont always play the games they design so I wouldnt be shocked

Does this plugin only go based off of plays on my server or does it reach out to some community recommendations database like rotten tomatoes or trakt or something? I just had to start my build over from scratch so no movies or shows have been watched yet. Could that be the problem? Log is below...

Hi,

I'm wondering if the issue is how the plugin is working on the beta server. On the stable version I dont seem to be having an issue. 

The media lists are not populating. 

This could mean changes in the API for community ratings.

Or, perhaps parental control changes.

You can place top picks at the top of the library lists, but not at the very top of the screen. My media will always be at the very top.

Log attached, i have also paid my $3 - i am running emby in docker, official server image, and on a dedicated unraid box with my media on seperate nas drives to the unraid box. Is this a permissions issue?

There shouldn't be a permission issue because we are using an emby directory where permissions are available... But, it also can't be ruled out.

oddly, after multiple reboots and disabling the collections add on, it populated and is now available on all users.. however..

 

Items are not in numerical order, also, when updating top picks, it doesnt change them..

Okay. Thanks for the update.

There are a couple reasons why the items might not change. 

If options are set to calculate top items a certain way.

What if you add the items yourself. Then run the refresh?

Do the items appear in the proper order on the home screen?

 

As an aside: It is possible that parental control may stop some items from appearing on sone accounts.

Under the hood, we are add items with a specific date added, which allows us to control where they appear in the list.

I suspect that we could be experiencing a latency somewhere.

yup there's alot of issue with tv series that needed to be addressed, but ignored.

but for movie, it is just fine as long as the image isn't broken

Just registered and installed the top picks plugin on the latest .65 beta. After multiple reboots the plugin was nowhere to be found despite the dll file being present in the data folder and showing successfully installed on the dashboard. Checked the logs and saw this " Not loading Emby.TopPicks.dll 1.0.0.55 because the minimum supported version is 1.0.0.56". Confused by that message as the latest version in the plugins catalogue is .55
