I would think if possible to just set the date added to current date and then force the hour to 01:00, 02:00, 03:00, 04:00 and so on through 9 which should solve for this

I would say you have some systemic error, as according those dates/time they should be sorting properly. What does Edit Metadata show for those items? Do you have NFO reader enabled in your Top Picks library? If you run Scan library files on your Top Picks right-click/three-dot menu, do they sort properly?

I’ll have to check but the top picks library was automatically created and I have never adjusted its settings. Is there a specific set of settings it needs?

Tbh don't remember initial/default configuration, as I automatically disable everything except NFO Reader on any library in my system, ditto for first version when Top Picks was released (whilst having NFO Saver enabled as well), but I would assume both NFO Reader and NFO Saver to be enabled upon library creation. Hence:

Interesting the Edit Metadata Date Added dates and times do not match the NFO files in the top picks data directory.

And therein lies your issue of improper sorting.

Of note, I did not have the metadata NFO plugin installed on my system. Is it needed?

I added the plugin, disabled all of the other settings in the library, enabled NFO saver and reader on the library, re-scanned the library and the sort order is the same.

Yeah I get that's the source of the problem, but how is it happening?

Unclear how would you get NFOs written without it installed (and considering it comes by default with new server installations, did you deliberately remove it in the past?).

As far as needing it, generally you don't need it for regular libraries and your system will work just fine, but not knowing Top Picks inner workings, I would assume it does utilize NFOs (something @chefmight give you answer to).

That works on my setup, by no means it means it will work on yours, especially if you don't have artwork/NFOs stored locally with your media, in which case other meta-providers/image fetchers are mandatory to be enabled.

Likely due to timestamps and Emby not seeing those items as "changed". If you Refresh metadata/Replace all, does it change? Or if you edit Item 1 NFO and change some value>Save>revert what you changed>Save and rescan library, does the order change, Item 1 being first?

Very strange. I found this in the log.

Indeed the dateadded dates and times are there. See screenshot of the TopPIcks created NFO files.

In my top picks,

#1 Windfall 03/06/2023 07:00:00

#2 Somebody I used to Know 03/06/2023 06:00:00

#3 Jung_E 03/06/2023 05:00:01

#4 A Cure for Wellness 03/06/2023 04:00:02

#5 Bob's Burgers Movie 03/06/2023 03:00:08

#6 Star Trek First Contact 03/06/2023 02:00:08

#7 A man called Otto 03/06/2023 01:00:09

#8 Young Frankenstein 03/06/2023 00:00:10

#9 Alien 03/05/2023 23:00:10

When sorted by Date added Descending my display order is 2,3,8,1,5,7,9,4,6

When sorted by Date added ascending my display order is 6,4,9,7,5,1,8,3,2

Screenshot 2023-03-06 at 9.32.24 AM.png

Hold up those dates look like they've been serialize improperly.

They should read "2023-03-06 06:00:00". With dashes, not "/" slashes.

This could be a problem. I just need to brush up on my xml, it's been a while, I usually use JSON.

Also, in the log from darkseidd, I see some red flags:

2023-03-05 23:27:31.772 Warn Top Picks: Can not deserialize nfo data
2023-03-05 23:27:31.772 Info Top Picks: File name: How I Met Your Father - 2x02 - FOMO

I should  have several fixes here.

On moment.

So i added the plugin, I rebuilt the top picks and now everything is in order. I'll keep an eye on things.

As far as where my NFO files have been coming from, I guess I don't know. Radarr metadata settings are all disabled. I don't specifically recall ever removing NFO metadata plugin previously, but who knows at this point. I have never encountered any other issues with my setup pertaining to metadata outside of this plugin though.

I think that with NFO disabled, Emby ignores them (or doesn't create them) for items in the  libraries.

Emby must use the dates in the database. But because Top Picks' works around the date added in order to place items in a rank from 1 to 9, that could explain why other libraries are not affected.

Keep us updated.

.55

Emby.TopPicks_1.0.0.55.zip

  • Better logging. If an items causes a server crash the log will tell us exactly why it did.
  • Custom Nfo files for items are created if serialization errors.
  • There shouldn't be anymore reference errors.

Okay, I'll push .55 to the catalog.

It should stop that reference error.

Personally never liked what that plugin does, moreso as changes it makes are irrevocable within Emby, one would have to Replace all metadata in order to revert them to original values (edit: and even that would not suffice in certain setups, depending on Date added behavior setting) - a big no-no in my book. But as said, personal preference.
