AV1, Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision?

Recommended Posts

My current situation is -

Firestick 4K Max: Supports AV1 and Dolby Vision but Dolby Atmos only via DD+ and not TrueHD
Shield TV Pro: Supports Dolby Atmos via TrueHD and Dolby Vision but not AV1.
Mini PC with i3 1115g4: From what I know supports AV1, Dolby Atmos via TrueHD but Dolby Vision is a mess with windows 11?

Is there anything that exists that will allow me to have all 3 things I want?

Ooooh didn’t know this was due thanks! So this would pass through Atmos to my LG C1 to then my Sonos system? As far as AV1 goes I’m currently using Nova Video Player as external player for Emby for as it supports HW Acceleration (encoded via Arc A380)

It's possible.  It is released on the 25th.  Current AV1 hardware decoders are expensive, so many device mfg are not bothering with them.  Some people have claimed the new Apple TV can brute force decode AV1, but we all know how well Emby plays with Apple TV haha.

Almost bought one of these - but only 100Mbit Ethernet Port built in and no HD Audio support ... :(

I'll pass ...

I have one coming today will report back. My Wi-Fi usually outputs 400Mbps so no issue with that.

edit - the 3rd gen FireCube that is.

HD Audio passthrough would be my #1 test ! (hint, hint..) 🤣

No “passthrough” but uses Dolby MAT to send Multichannel PCM 7.1 with Atmos metadata. Definitely works as just started 13 Hours and the overhead working with the plane flyover at the start.

A compromise I guess (and good for ARC connected devices), but disappointing as I wanted direct passthrough.

tbh - My Shield Pro 2019 still plays everything thrown at it - so I really have no need to upgrade it but I guess I'll have to wait for the Shield Pro 2022/23 if I want new toys - haha

I might add, needs eARC for the Atmos metadata.

Nvidia really need to do something about announcing a new Shield.  After the ATV4K being announced and not having AV1, perfect time for them to swoop in supporting everything.

Scrap that.. It's not working as I thought.. Just very good simulation of it. It should report Dolby Atmos or Dolby Multichannel PCM 7.1 when working properly.

Plugged the Shield Pro into the Firecube HDMI in, turned on HDMI IN Passthrough and Dolby Atmos works.. So yeah back to square one really. Might as well send it back and use the 4K Max for AV1 and Shield for my 4K Muxes. What a ballache. C'mon Nvidia, do something.

Edit - But then again I hate switching HDMI ports.. So either buy a HDMI Switch that does 4K, Atmos etc or keep the cube and use the HDMI in.. Least it's super quick to switch to when want to watch 4K.

I'm a bit spoilt with a AVR I guess as it just auto switches to whatever device last had an input on it.    I just turn on the Shield, which turns on the AVR which turns on the TV - single button and it's ready 😎

If you just got it for AV1, then yea, seems an expensive outlay - but it does have all the Alexa integration (as I have the original FireTV Cube on another TV) - that is nice to tell Alexa to "Open Emby" and it turns on the TV and fire's up Emby for you .. :)

I should get around to fixing the full Alexa integration tbh - it had it working and it broke for some reason ...

Anyway - I'm digressing - yea, I would wait for the Shield 2022 🤣

By that I mean my TV only has so many ports.. TiVo PS5 eARC and then one more. So to use both I need HDMI switch or manually change.

Sure - I'm just saying with an AVR, you just use one HDMI as monitor into the TV, all other devices plug into the AVR directly (of which there is usually at least 6 x HDMI ports..).

Decided to stop with the AV1 encodes, will revert back to HEVC for now and use my Shield primarily. Who knows how long till Emby has HW AV1 for its player.

If anyone sees someone thing release with the specifications I’m after please do let me know though.

the only other think I can think of would be a PC, but we know DolbyVision is a mess on PC.

Happy days! FireTV Cube Gen3 update has enabled TrueHD Atmos passthrough for apps. Wooohooo

Now just need Emby to update to have AV1 HW playback 😊

  • Thanks 2
