F1nchy 29 Posted October 8, 2022 Posted October 8, 2022 I was wondering as the Emby app on my Android tablet has a side menu and on the web UI you can enable it. I have my movies and TV shows in quite a lot of library groups and I've always found it much easier to navigate a vertical menu than horizontal ones. I also think it looks much tidier. Just wondered, thought I'd ask, I always thought it was a strange decision to lose it in the first place. Thanks
ebr 16169 Posted October 8, 2022 Posted October 8, 2022 Hi. It will be there in our standard app on the TV devices. Just not quite yet.
F1nchy 29 Posted October 8, 2022 Author Posted October 8, 2022 Is the standard Android app going to be updated to work on Android TV then?

F1nchy 29 Posted October 8, 2022 Author Posted October 8, 2022 (edited) Ah, ok! Thanks, think I'll give it a go on my Shield TV (not my main player, that's a Humax Aura!) to see what it's like before I try it on the Aura. Edited October 8, 2022 by F1nchy 1

It depends on which Shield you have. The 32-bit Arm7 version will run on any Shield, but only the Tube is actually 32-bit. If you have a Shield pro, then you will be better using the Armv8 file.

F1nchy 29 Posted October 8, 2022 Author Posted October 8, 2022 (edited) Hmmm, ok, just installed it, not sure that's what I meant by the vertical menu, it looks almost identical to the current Android TV one, ie it still displays all the "My Media" sources horizontally and just the "Latest New" from each media source vertically, but only shows 20 or so for each source. I was hoping it would display the media sources vertically, kind of like it does in Plex. Changing it to horizontal is a radical change though, very interesting. The only issue for be is that I have around 30 media sources (movies and TV shows sorted how I like them) so that's a lot to scroll through horizontally at the top, even just to get to the settings! It's the orginal Shield, yes, I could only see the Arm7 download so installed that. Edited October 8, 2022 by F1nchy

FrostByte 5392 Posted October 8, 2022 Posted October 8, 2022 Take the link from the website and remove the filename. It should take you the link below Emby.Releases/android at master · MediaBrowser/Emby.Releases (github.com) The 2015 and 2017 Shields are also 64-bit. The only one which isn't is the 2019 Tube.
F1nchy 29 Posted October 8, 2022 Author Posted October 8, 2022 Ah, ok, I misunderstood, I thought you meant it was in the Standard app but that wasn't available yet for normal download, I thought the sideload apk had it. Great, I'll keep an eye out for it, having the media sources in a vertical list will make it much easier for us to find movies, etc. Thanks
FrostByte 5392 Posted October 8, 2022 Posted October 8, 2022 Hopefully soon, it should already be in the latest standard app, just not while in TV mode yet.
F1nchy 29 Posted October 8, 2022 Author Posted October 8, 2022 OK, thanks, looking forward to that then! 1
F1nchy 29 Posted December 2, 2022 Author Posted December 2, 2022 Hi Frostbyte, just wondering if the Android app is any nearer to having the new UI in TV mode yet? Waiting with anticipation as I think it'll massively change how we use Emby (for the better!)

F1nchy 29 Posted December 4, 2022 Author Posted December 4, 2022 (edited) Hi Luke I just downloaded the apk from that link and sideloaded it but it's no different in vertical display, it still shows the old format. It's showing v3.2.87 in the app. I tried changing to horizontal and then back to vertical (exiting each time) but still showing like this. Thanks (ignore the PIP of BBC1, that's my Aura leaving that on!) Edited December 4, 2022 by F1nchy

F1nchy 29 Posted December 4, 2022 Author Posted December 4, 2022 I'm confused. My first post was asking if there would be a vertical option on the Android app on TVs, ebr said there would but it wasn't on there yet, only horizontal. I understand it won't be on the Android for TV app because that's being replaced with the Android app for all devices. I have both versions on my device. When I change the Android app to horizontal it looks very different, a horizontal menu along the top and lots of options below for each media group, but when I change it to vertical it looks exactly the same as it has for ages, ie as above. From what ebr and Frostbyte said we were getting a vertical version of the new layout whereby the media groups are vertical and all the options you get on the new horizontal look would be available. Are you saying that's not correct?

Are you saying that's not correct? It's the other way around. It is the horizontal home screen that is outdated and doesn't follow your emby user home screen settings. So if anything, that will update to match the categorization of the vertical home screen.
F1nchy 29 Posted December 5, 2022 Author Posted December 5, 2022 (edited) Still confused. When I select horizontal display I get this below, where I have to scroll along the top (horizontally) to go through each media node. Are you saying that this is the old layout? The one I posted a picture of before is the layout it's always been for me on Emby for Android TV. I thought it would be different for TV mode on the Android app that's replacing the Android TV one? Luke 42077 Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 Quote I thought it would be different for TV mode on the Android app that's replacing the Android TV one? The vertical layouts in both apps are the same. The standard app has the horizontal option. The horizontal home screen currently does not utilize all of your home screen options, so the way the content is categorized may have to change at some point in order to accommodate that.
F1nchy 29 Posted December 5, 2022 Author Posted December 5, 2022 Ok, so in my first post I asked if there was any chance we would get a vertical menu on the TV version like there is on the Android app and Web UI and in the second post ebr said will be in the standard app for TV devices. So what you're saying is that not correct then? We are not getting a vertical menu?

F1nchy 29 Posted December 5, 2022 Author Posted December 5, 2022 Everything revolves around the 'My Media' section, and at the moment the My Media section is horizontal, so you have to scroll horizontally through the different media nodes you have set up. I have a lot, and it's a bit of a faff. In the web UI you have all the My Media down the left, and can also pin it (as in the picture below), and in the Android app you can get a vertical menu of all your My Media nodes. That is was I was hoping would make it into the Emby for Android TV app or TV mode in the Android app. It's much easier navigating vertically than horizontally and personally I think it looks much tidier. Kind of like is it in Plex. I actually prefer the Plex layout because of that (I have both) but I prefer using Emby in general and we've used Emby as our main media player for years. 1
