Video plays roughly 70% of way, then skips while audio plays

Hey, it's been a while.

I've had an issue periodically where playing a video -- generally a long episode or a movie -- will play for about 70% of the way, to which it will then act as if it's being greatly fast-forwarded, all while the audio keeps playing at the normal rate. The progress bar keeps with the audio.

I thought it originally was just some corrupt files, but never had this playback issue with them before, which then led me to think it was the storage itself, but all health checks are showing clear.

If I download the file to my laptop and just play it that way, it works perfectly fine.

Is there any idea as to what might be going on here with codec, playback, transcoding, etc?
This one is an AVI file. I do not remember the file types of the other files I had issues with previously.

EDIT: I have added the below information of the logs as requested for media playback issues.

Then add the following information to your report in the forum:
  • Exactly what you were doing and what happened.  Include the name of whatever you played if it is a playback problem
    • I went to the file (Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares - Season 01 Episode 4 -- Moore Place)
    • Played it from the beginning
    • Fast-forwarded to when it would show video skipping yet play the audio normally
    • Let it play briefly to show it skipping
    • Rewound ten seconds before it would start to skip and let it play normally (which it did)
    • Let it start skipping again as described previously for about ten seconds
    • Sent logs
  • The time you sent the log (in Eastern Time please - UTC -5)
    • Roughly 18:01 EST (6:01 PM)
  • The name of the Emby user on the local server that was logged in at the time
    • senpai

Thanks for any insight. Cheers!

Just also confirmed that I can play with an "External Player" (meaning streaming from the server) just fine as well.

Hi there, let's look at an example. Please attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue. Thanks!

Hey hey! Thanks for the heads-up. I added the information. Let me know what you can see.

I have the exact same issue but it's only with SD content in my case.

Avi & WMV files are always problem with emby (in-fact in any andrioid system).
i always get green banding/no-video while playing any files in avi container. ( i use emby in fire tv)

Use this tool to diagnose your problematic file - https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo
if the codec used is xvid/divx then you might need to re-encode the files with modern days codec like x264/5.

Hi, are you still having an issue with this?

Hi.  Also, does the anomaly always happen at about 35 minutes in?

@swagardson so you're playing from Android TV?

As a test, can you try sideloading our standard android app on the same device and see how that compares?

Thanks.

Sorry for the delay in follow-up. It didn't cross my mind to use the standard app. I can give it a shot here shortly and report back.

This could be the culprit as well. It would just be such a pain to have to do this for all of my AVI files. It'd obviously be great if it "just worked", but I know that's not how life works.

Still happens, but obviously I haven't followed up.

Yes! Anywhere from 33-35 minutes, I'd say. Sounds like there might be a lead?
