lightsout 156 Posted September 26, 2022 Posted September 26, 2022 Has anyone found a review for the new Ryzen igpu that tests media encoding? It can encode h264 and HEVC, and decode AV1 (wish this was also encore). But I only see people testing gaming performance. Here's a list of reviews. https://videocardz.com/138525/amd-ryzen-7000-zen4-raphael-desktop-cpu-review-roundup 1
neik 873 Posted September 26, 2022 Posted September 26, 2022 It's German and just very small part of the review but here are some figures for 2160p60 h264 -> 2160p60 h265: https://www.computerbase.de/2022-09/amd-ryzen-7950x-7900x-7700x-7600x-test/5/#abschnitt_igpuleistung_in_spielen_encoding_und_compute What I do not understand is why there such a big difference between 7950x and 7700x while HW-Transcoding when both have 2 CUs?

Thank you, yeah that seems off. Notice the 12900k sits with the 7700x but the 12900ks tops the list. Seems like this bottom two were running in software or something. The igpu on all of the Ryzen chips is the same, not sure if the 7950 has some other advantage to speed it up but I doubt it.
RanmaCanada 494 Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 Considering they are still using RDNA 2, expect it to be garbage. Intel has the best hardware encoders currently, until a comparison can be made with Lovelace. Remember, speed means nothing if the output is potato. If you want AV1 encode, just grab an Intel ARC GPU.

It's nice to see Ryzen finally have some igpu I suppose.

That alone doesn't necesserly mean that the De-/Encoder block is exactly the same, it could have a newer VCE unit. I don't think it has otherwise AMD would have promoted it, I guess... Maybe @softworkz has some insights...
softworkz 5066 Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 No idea. With regards to media acceleration, AMD is currently of little relevance for applications like Emby. This is my recent message to them: https://github.com/GPUOpen-LibrariesAndSDKs/AMF/issues/348#issuecomment-1239922856 1

Until AMD proves me wrong, I will stick with what the evidence holds to be true. There is also no mention of any encoding ASICS on the specifications page for the new processors The onboard GPU also performs worse than previous gen because it's limited to 2 cores (beaten by a Ryzen 3 2200G haha). Does the IGP support AV1 decode? Yes, it is similar in capabilities to the Ryzen 6000 Series. It's the same RDNA2 compute units, same VCN [Video] and DCN [Display] IP. https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-zen-4-ryzen-7000-technical-details/ It will be garbage tier. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_Core_Next
