jriker1 20 Posted September 4, 2022 Posted September 4, 2022 Was considering replacing my Windows server that Emby runs on and the new one will be a virtual server. Couple questions: 1. Anyone know what OS VMWare ESXi technically is and if Emby could be installed directly on it vs setting up a virtual for emby? 2. If I move from Windows to Linux or even another Windows server (still thinking this thru), how do you bring over your database including, list of unc paths to all the content, what's been watched, etc? Reason I'm considering doing this directly on the hypervisor is I haven't figured out the logic yet, but if movies are streaming from a drive array connected to the main server, into the virtual machine, then back out and to the client thinking data would flow slower than going more direct. Plus if there is any transcoding, would thinking work better direct on the server vs in a virtual machine. Thoughts? Thanks. JR

hispeed 9 Posted September 5, 2022 Posted September 5, 2022 @jriker1 I run emby on a VM on Esxi 7.X this is no problem. Hardware endcoding is different story i finaly bought today a Nivida P2000 card I hope that I can get it working but I'm not sure. I recommend using a Debian Linux and then install only emby on it. I map the network drives from my synology into this vm. No problem at all if you have 1 gbit lan and switches. You can also transfer the current database as Luke mentioned this is the normal backup process. 1
