Sentinel 12 Posted August 27, 2022 Posted August 27, 2022 Hi All, I have been having a few issues with my Shield TV Pro stop responding for a few seconds when playing videos, so took the plunge and reset it to factors defaults and then reinstalled emby (beta). I have it all setup and its running but Stats for Nerds says its playing everything with HTTP streams instead of FILE, Not sure if it was like this before or if its normal, but i found this link and it says to enable pass direct path, although on my shield tv the option is greyed out. I have shared folder paths setup on the Emby server. Is this normal or have i missed a setting when reset the device? Thanks
FrostByte 5392 Posted August 27, 2022 Posted August 27, 2022 Which version of Android are you running on your Shield? See the note at the top of that link. It was disabled under Android 11+ because it required opening up some security features and Google wanted to slap a big warning on it in the store which scared people away. If your Shield is on SE9.x you would need to fall back to SE8.x in order to use it.
Sentinel 12 Posted August 27, 2022 Author Posted August 27, 2022 hiya, thanks for quick reply. I am running the latest shield experience 9 on 11 i think, i haven't had it long, heard it was one of the best so i got one. Is this something i can revert to or am i stuck with it, it works 99.9% of the time, but skipping can be a pain sometimes.
FrostByte 5392 Posted August 27, 2022 Posted August 27, 2022 There are a few of us who have fallen back @rbjtech @Audiomixer and me. Though Audiomixer and I have since upgraded back to SE9. It's not easy, but it can be done. I was using DFA and it worked great for me.
FrostByte 5392 Posted August 27, 2022 Posted August 27, 2022 Here are the instructions I used https://florisse.nl/shield/ and I had to use these usb drivers under Win11 Samsung Android USB Driver | Samsung Developers
FrostByte 5392 Posted August 27, 2022 Posted August 27, 2022 You can brick your Shield though if you mess up the flashing of the images and there's no turning around once you start that step, so make sure you read the instructions over well.
FrostByte 5392 Posted August 27, 2022 Posted August 27, 2022 Before reverting to SE8 though you may want to see if the devs can solve your issue without using DFA. Most people are running just fine using HTTP
Sentinel 12 Posted August 27, 2022 Author Posted August 27, 2022 Hiya, Yes, for the very few issues i have with it, i shall just stick with it as it is. I work in IT, had a few things have had to downgrade or mod over the years and also a bit of a nightmare knowing you may have to go get a new one if it all goes wrong. Thank you very much for your advice and help though, very much appreciated as always Thanks
Audiomixer 374 Posted August 27, 2022 Posted August 27, 2022 Having downgraded a few times back to SE8 just to try things, i found no advantage to stay with 8 especially sine I Never could get DFA to work on either of my shields anyway.
Sentinel 12 Posted August 27, 2022 Author Posted August 27, 2022 Thank you for your input. Think i am just going to stick with it on the latest version. Just got to fix the issues i have with emby on it on the beta version, If i try to fast forward or rewind, it will some times just freeze for a minute, then if i force close emby and start to play the same file, it might just fast forward and rewind ok. Very weird. I see there was a new beta version 2.0.80 released on 23rd Not got it yet, so will see if that fixes my issues when it live updates itself. Couldn't see one, but is there a setting for the buffer size at all? am on network cable with all devices, so cant see it being a speed issue as all local network.

It was like this before for you and that is normal. There should be no reason for you to need direct file access for playback. 1
