Quick way to set date added to date released?

Is there a quick way to change the date an item was added to the release date of that item? I'd like to change a bunch of items, so I can use sort by date added as a simple way to move newly added but old releases out of the top of the new added list.

If not, I'm perfectly fine to run SQL queries to do it that way, if there's standard db connectivity. 

Or I'll write an API based tool if it comes to that, if the API can modify those metadata items?

Not entire sure how the (Premium) TimeLord plugins do it but this is exactly what they do (plugins catalog).
