Hey everyone,

I've been wanting to set up Emby Connect for quite a while now so I can watch my movies on-the go, and once I got it all set up and running, and it tells me that "We're unable to connect to the selected server right now. Please ensure it is running and try again." It is running, my Emby server runs from the time I turn on my computer, to when I turn it off. I have heard that the T-Mobile ISP hinders the connection to the server. Though, I have heard something about "tunneling?"

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Hey up,

Emby Connect is completely optional feature that you don't need to access your server remotely (but of course you can use it if you want); what you do need, however, is to setup your server for remote access, kindly go through the steps in thr remote connections troubleshooter and post the outcome here, which steps worked and which didn't (and put tunneling aside for now, that has no impact in your current setup):

Alright so, I start with remote access, both of them are checked, and I cannot enable uPnP from my router. I might have to talk to a T-Mobile rep about that. Next up, port forwarding, can't do that either. My router doesn't give me a lot of customization options. Under Verify Public IP and Port it says, "If it doesn't remote access will not work and likely your ISP is using CG-NAT and you are blocked from running services.  In this case visit our forums for assistance." I have turned off my VPN, (for now) and have run tracert 8.8.8.8 and lines 2-5 use 192 as the first number, and it also says "What you want to see is if any of the next 3 or 4 lines start with 10., 192. or 172.  If the first number is a 172 we need to check the second number to see if it's between 16 to 31.  If any of these returned lines matches this you are likely being blocked by your ISP."

A Remote IP does show up, but it is not the same as it should be on canyouseeme.org, and even when I do try port 8096, it times out.

Likely ports are blocked.  I recently moved and now am in a similar situation, there are options.  I am using Cloudflare tunnel to access my Emby server and related services remotely

Z,  You can go here to look up all instructions on router settings for T-Mobile leased routers.  I am guessing that some features might be locked by T-Mobile so users don't get into setting issues that cause support calls.  If your leased router cannot do everything you need to do, the option would be to return it and go buy your own router so you have complete control of your Wifi Network.

Actually, the only way it works is using some sort of VPN (I use Tailscale) to access your Emby remotely. Don't know specifically about using Emby Connect, but TMHI is IPV6 only on the public side, and it is rapidly changed, and there is absolutely no IPV4 port forwarding that can be configured in the TMHI router. Frustrating, but there's a LOT of apps that have a lot of retooling to go through in order to work natively on IPV6.

I had the same issue with T-Mobile Home Internet and discovered it is the carrier-grade NAT used by T-Mobile. Emby Connect didn't work for me , either. A reverse proxy program like LocalXpose or a VPN that allows port forwarding like PureVPN work. My other problem is that I have Emby on my QNAP NAS and I need to learn more about Linux. Unfortunately, until I learn more, I have converted to using PLEX, which does NOT have this problem when using their cloud-connect. I like Emby better and I wish Emby could correct this.

Lastly, I just found out that T-Mobile has a Business Internet Router, the Inseego Wavemaker FX2000 5g Indoor Router that can port-forward! I am "negotiating" with T-Mobile to see if they will swap-out my Sagecom Router for this one.

which does NOT have this problem when using their cloud-connect.

That's because they have a relay feature where they can run all of your data and streams through their own servers. Do you really want this? They kick this on automatically whenever a direct connection isn't' possible.

Here is my original question, re-posted to the public forum. I prefer emby over Plex and want to be able to access my NAS outside the home.

I run emby on my QNAP NAS. I have T-Mobile Home Internet that apparently uses carrier grade NAT. I can not connect remotely with T-Mobile but had no issues with Comcast. Will Portmapper fix my problem? If no, will LocalXpose? PureVPN? If none, will switching to T-Mobile Business help? They offer a port-forwarding modem, the Inseego Wavemaker FX2000 5g Indoor Router. Does anyone have any experience with this modem and T-Mobile accessing emby on a QNAP NAS?

Not sure if it will work on the NAS, but I use Tailscale for remote access to my Windows Emby server on TMHI.
