Random movies/series view on Startpage

I'd be interested in this, or something like this.  I kinda want to get my family using my Emby server more and one thing that lures them away is when streaming services like Hulu get in their face and say "hey, we have X and Y movies or TV series".  Having optional rows/suggestions on the home screen, even just random shows and movies, would probably be enough to get people to say "that looks interesting" or "I haven't seen that in a while" and watch.

Dunno if this is the right place to ask, but are there any options as far as suggestions on the home page go?  Aside from the latest media added?

What about simply being able to show playlist/ smart playlists as a Home Screen item? Then admins could customize the sections as they see fit.

Surely this should be easy to implement, Based on Genre , Cast etc. Why does it take so long to add the little bit of code it would take ?

Interesting that you mention that.  There are quite a few possible features.  Which ones do everyone like.  Is there anything I missed?  Each feature has to be coded separately and if the design misses something, it's considerable more work to go back in and change the code.  Also, all the features should be tested for all setups and using multiple options also need to be testing.  I think 'easy to implement'  is perhaps understated.

1.       Appearance on the home page options?

a.       New row that can be moved up and down in the order it appears.

b.      One or more genres

c.      One or more tags

d.      By studio

e.      By actor / director

f.       By MPA Movie / TV rating

g.      By other ratings

h.      From a private admin playlist

i.       All sort orders possible

j.       Media on the featured list that is not in a library that is available to some users, should automtically not appear.

k.      Number of media automatically pulled can be set

l.       The name of the row should be editable by the admin

m.    Media may be added from any library.  This means all the poster links are like bookmarks and can show multiple libraries.

n.      Should a trending or popular automatic list pull only from each user or should it pull from all users.

2.       Admin dashboard controls for each of the options.

a.      Should there be a preview of the update row as the admin works on it?

b.      Should the admin be able to drag and drop to reorder?

c.      Should there be a separate page in the Admin settings for the featured row?

d.      Should there be a start and end date and time so the featured row can automatically appear and then retire on a specific date and time?

e.      Should the admin be able to limit which users can see what ratings?

f.       Should there be a Trending, Latest viewed option and would this pull recent views of all users and should the admin be able to set a cut off date for the last weeks, months, or season?

Just stumbled upon this, was this ever implemented? I feel something like this would be good because depending on someones movies library you may forget about some good ones you were planning to watch, so tossing them on a rotation of sorts, recommending movies that are unplayed, etc..
