Is there an update on multipart movie status - I have just added the twos part of The Best of Youth,  as noted in imdb there really should be 2 parts (or 4 if I had the tv version) so I do not want to join them.

I have put them in their own folder \The Best of Youth (2003) and named them

  • The Best of Youth (2003)-part1.mkv
  • The Best of Youth (2003)-part2.mkv

However the Emby menu (Server on Windows, android phone, Nvidia TV Shield) shows a single 3 hour movie + Addtional Parts and the second part does not start when the first part ends.

What am I doing wrong, can I fix this.

Thanks

Hi, currently you have to manually start the second part. We will continue to work on improving multi-part support, but for the best experience possible I would suggest joining the files. You can do that easily with just a few clicks with something like mkvtoolnix.

Hi, Given each part is over 3 hours and they are intended to be separate, I will leave them as they are (I am quite happy to edit, but I don't think it is appropriate here).  Any idea when this will be addressed (it works in Plex and used to work in Yamj on my long dead NMTs).

If the parts are intended to be separate, is it actually appropriate that the second part plays automatically after the first (serious question)?

In any case, a single click to start is not an ordeal - after all, if it played automatically you might well want to click to pause it to get a cup of tea or whatever...

But there's another way.  Put it in a series folder, and set your client to automatically play the next episode.  I note that TVDB even supports both two and four part versions of this film as a series (2-part as s00e01-s00e02, and 4-part as s01e01-s01e04) as well as the whole movie as a single item.

Hi.  If you really want to treat them separately, I would make them separate items and then put them in a collection.

I appreciate the suggestions, though (and I know I am being very pedantic) I don't want to add them as a series (if I had the 4 part version i would) because (a) they are not a series (b) I keep films and series on different drives (c) I want to see it listed under movies.  Equally I know I could use collections, but I see that as a home for 'proper' collections (MCU, Bond, Batman, etc) and not for one movie that happens to be shown (including a the cinema) in two parts.

I am happy to settle with Movie plus Additional for now, what I was hoping to find out is  when (or possibly whether) there will be direct (rather than workaround) support for multipart movies.

These are really quite unusual but could be handled in one of the suggested ways.

The real reason most of these movies were split were due to size limits imposed by either file systems or the physical media at the time they were produced.  Neither of those limits really exist anymore so joining the files is the best approach.

Given that, spending development time on more "advanced" handling of multipart items doesn't make  lot of sense right now with such a limited applicability.
