Driving me insane - Why is remote so hard?

Spent hours trying to get this set up, different ways - Same outcome.

So currently I have the port 8920 forwarded via my Asus RT-AC86U router with the IP there being the one the Emby server is on (static IP) (UPnP is off) which is connected to Virgin Media Hub 4 (in modem mode)

Google Domain created
I have used ZeroSSL to set up SSL Cert
Emby Network settings changed, including pointing to the certificate that was created

However - Error: I could not see your service on 86.xx.xxx.xxx on port (8920)
Reason: Connection timed out

On Chrome browser via mobile data says - DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN

I have looked through numerous threads and nothing I do seems to help

nxdomain is a DNS failure that the dns name you are using is not resolving on the internet.

on a command prompt (doesn't really matter what os) - type

nslookup your_google_dns_name

don't post it here - but is this the same IP as what you get if you went into google and asked what your public IP is ?

ps - as a fellow Virgin Media user, PM me f you like and I will try and assist as it sound like you are almost there .. ;)

Hmm.. Nope not even close. the nslookup results look odd indeed.

Edit- Wait when you say google dns name? Do you mean the Domain name I set up?

ok - so have you setup Dynamic DNS on your client ? - this updates the DNS record on the Web, so that it points to your home (VM) actual public IP address.  Unless you do this, then your google DNS name will never reach you because it has the wrong IP address ...

Depending what hardware you are using - you can probably do this in the Asus.  Look for ddns - and hopefully it will support google (as that's who your domain is with).   You don't HAVE to use google - you just need to keep your public DNS record updated with whatever Virgin Media have dynamically given you - this will change over time - so you must setup DDNS.

yes .. :)

I've taken "Google Domain created" in the first post to mean you registered your domain using Google ?

Thanks I'll look into this.. I did try on Asus but kept coming up with request failed or authentication failed.

This is what is shown on Google Domains section.. It won't let me input data so stays at 0.0.0.0 .. Which I guess is where the issue is.

Correct - that would be my guess.

Once the 'Data' matches your VM Public IP address - (and an nslookup does the same) - then you should be in business.

I honestly have no idea what I am doing beyond this point. That data still says 0.0.0.0 . I assume I need some sort of DDNS client as Asus isn't working (Note : If the wireless router is using a private WAN IP address (192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, or 172.16.x.x), this router may be under a multi-layer NAT network. The DDNS service is not able to work under this environment.). But now I'm lost, I really wish this was more user friendly.. Well admin friendly.

Well that's weird.. I changed the default SSL Port in use to something much higher and now it works remotely and I would assume as I have it set to allow only secure connections that it is indeed using that.

Hi, so are you all set now?

Yeah I mean the DDNS stuff hasn't been done, so I have no idea if I will run into any issues, but it works.

I do have a different issue though, but not sure if need to open a new post for it or not. I've downloaded the Android APK it automatically asks me about accepting SSL, I assume due to being on the same network that it knows which server I want to connect to, however I see the list of users but no log in works. I have to go to change server, find new server and input the domain and port for the ssl connection then I can log in and switch users freely (Non are linked to Emby connect). Once I've restarted the app it will auto sign me in to last logged in but then cannot switch user as it says incorrect sign in details, I'd then need to proceed with the find new server stuff again.

Ddns needs to be fixed, as if VM ever change your public IP, it will stop working.

Where is that log from - is that the Asus ?

Any public DNS update will need to be done from your domain provider - as you need authentication for whoever owns that domain - otherwise anybody could just update your record and break it.

So if you got your domain from google - then you'll need to auth with google to get the ddns entry updated.

I would open a new post for this - as this behaviour does not seem correct.

Yeah from Asus.. So in the Google DNS it's confusing..

In the Host name, what do I put? My Domain or something else, it doesn't quite make sense and I cannot seem to find an answer, maybe the Asus was coming back with that error due to the port misconfig hmm

Well magically that now works too.. DDNS set up :) Will make new post about Android later. Thanks for the assist.

Ports are not related to DNS.

Are you using the login you got with the google domain setup process in the Asus for DDNS - and have you followed the link I sent about as it tells you how to set it up ?

If your happy to - ping me a Private Message with the actual domain you are using (from google) and your WAN IP provided by VM - I will see if I can see what's going on.

ah ha great - yes DNS will take a little time to replicate (literally around the world) - so may be instant, but could sometimes take a while.

so an nslookup <your_google_domain> is now resolving to your VM WAN Address correct ?

If yes, then assuming your port forward,  firewall rules and Certificate are good - then you should be good to go !
