Emby Connect leads to confusion - If you dont use it......

every few weeks, sometimes more, I get a request that a users password does not work.

Usually after an internet issue, new device or some other reason and they are again presented with the landing page on their device.

Of course, in front of their face is the emby connect and password.

As I dont use emby connect, the users put their defined user/password in there and spend ages trying to get it to work until they call me, or refer back to their instructions from years back where I say to 'setup manually, or skip, which is burried down the bottom.

Does anyone else get fed up of this ?  or does everyone with remote users use emby connect ?

If emby connect is not prevelent out there, then I would love a re-write of this sort of page - it is very confusing :

Right it's two different login mechanisms, so you have to know which login screen you're on and use the appropriate credentials for it.

Would be great if there was an advanced setting tickbox that says ‘disable emby connect’ and then users just get a simple user/password/server/port.  For me anyway.

Right but such an option would still need to be right in front of the users and not controllable on your server because at that point they haven't connected yet.

Ah yes, silly me.  It’s the apps themselves.  Maybe I should just convert the users that do it all the time to emby connect then……

Maybe the first page on the apps could be a question on using emby connect or manual connect?  Rather than a user/password ?

Or maybe I delete the family members that keep doing this to me!!!!!!!!!

The Emby Connect login will ultimately be changed to email only and then I think that will help a small amount, because they'll realize they never gave Emby an email address and therefore can't use that sign in screen.

That can have many meanings and having had "family" members that "deleting" seemed appropriate for I find it somewhat hard to decide exactly how that statement "should" be interpreted. We could also use retroactive birth control to achieve the same purpose. :D ;) 😜

Actually it seems that if users cause problems then access should be restricted or eliminated. You are providing a service and if someone abuses their access privileges then it is perfectly reasonable to remove the access.

But I may have a somewhat skewed view of "Emby connect" as, to me, it seems about as totally worthless as a feature can be. I feel about Emby connect much as I do about websites that redirect you to another site for "security" reasons. In general "redirection" is for hiding an actual address and that "hiding" just feels nefarious or worse.

That would be good - a step at least.

This.

It is commonplace for apps to start by asking how you want to log in - typically Google, Facebook, or a local login.  Having Emby start with such an option (in this case, of course, Emby Connect or server login as the options) would be entirely in line with normal procedures.

I vote that also.  A question on app startup.
