Chromecast with Google TV bandwidth issue.

Hi I am having an issue with playback on my Chromecast with Google TV. when I play something with playback set to auto it will top out the playback at 40.2Mbs if the movie is encoded above that then it will transcode. I have a download speed to the Google TV of 129Mbs so can't understand why Emby will not go above 41Mbs?. I have Emby installed on my LG TV and it will stream anything without transcoding or have any issues with playback. I have tried setting the playback on the Google TV to various speeds without any success. I have attached logs from playback set at 100Mbs and at auto. Also the same movie played back on the LG TV for comparison. Any help appreciated.

SA,

Have you tested the connection speed that Chromecast actually gets and the Wifi speed that can be downloaded at the Chromecast dongle location with a speed Analyzer on a phone or tablet?  There are many apps available.  I use Wifi Analyzer on Android.  Here is a page that talks about testing Chromecast and offers a different Analyzer app. https://analiti.com/app-tv-chromecast-google-tv

What GHz band is Chromecast set on 2.4 or 5?  How far and what is between the Chromecast dongle and the Wifi router, besides open air?

Is anyone else also using your Wifi?

The speed demand of 41Mbs would normally be solved using hard cable connections in any post production house and never rely on Wifi because of too many Wifi issues.  I think Home Theater installers do the same thing.  They don't rely on Wifi, except for remote app controller.  Wifi certainly can work for speeds around that throughput.  I never install any media streaming office or home theater, where it pulls from Wifi.   I can't tell from your question if you are using Wifi or not.  I thought Chromecast only does Wifi, but maybe some version can handle Ethernet.  If you post your results to the above tests, i think will be easier to pinpoint what part of your network needs help.

Hi The Chromecast is wired to the router directly and is getting 129Mbs on average down and 19Mbs up so no wi-fi. both the Chromecast and my TV are on the same router both use the same brand cat6 cable.

It appears you are trying to remotely stream high bitrate (UHD) 4K media - which is a big ask - however, if it works on the LG TV, then that proves your internet download connection (and the server upload connection) is up to the task.

It may simply be that the Chromcast is not designed to handle that 4K bitrate (looking at the logs).  It probably tops out @ 40Mbit.

Supported Media for Google Cast  |  Google Developers

Also to note - the LG may support the HD Audio, the Chromecast will certainly not.  So worth trying to stream using AC3 or AAC Audio.

Hi I have had a look at the link and the following are supported.

Chromecast with Google TV

  • H.264 High Profile up to level 5.1 (4Kx2K/30fps)
  • HEVC / H.265 Main and Main10 Profiles up to level 5.1 (4Kx2K@60fps)
  • VP9 Profile-2 up to 4Kx2K@60fps

So should be able to stream 4K video?

I didn't say it could not stream 4K Video, I said it may not be able to stream 40+Mbit 4K Videos's ;)

It is a 4K streaming device - typically 20 Mbit max (Netflix).  UHD Remux's run @ 40-100Mbit/sec .. thus potentially way beyond the capabilities of this device.

The LG (and many other devices) can handle this bitrate without issues - thus they work ok.

I don't know for sure if this is it's limit - it doesn't say - but it it's starts to fail around this mark on all the video's you have tried - then it's looking to be the issue.
