Where are you located (country) as that will dictate the best host. Then ask yourself where are you storing your media as hosts charge a fortune for reall larghe storage requirements, and port number is not really relevant as get a cheap domain name, put emby behind a proxy and use https port

Okay so i have tried a fair few host providers so heres some recommendations:

Cloud

  • OVH - okay price but not much of a performance / price benefit, network peering is good
  • Hetzner - This will be many peoples favs, i used to use them as they were very competitive, but not so much any more, they have bumped prices up several times (blaming ip v4 addresses) Network perring is okay but to the UK it can play up at times
  • COntabo et all - Not used them but are cheap

I currently use Netcup and can state as a fact they are one of the best hosts i have used (i host many websites with them on root servers), Great pricing, great control panel and perring to the UK is the best and in fact i sometimes getter better ping times to their than i did to OVH London.

Point to note if you read reviews about netcup it seems like they get a bad rep. But to be honest it's because they do not tolerate abusers of the system, in that if you agree to use a service then you agree to pay. If you dont pay they will take legal action. And thats why i think they have great peering because the resources are not being abused by.

If you sign up for 6 months you pay for 6 months, If you cancel late you pay for the next 6 months. People did not follow the cancellation process then go about complaining when they are charged

As a point to note they have 2 types of VPS:

  • Cloud VPS - Shared Cpu and Memory 1gbps BW
  • Root Server -  Same as above but Dedicated CPU Cores and 2.5gbps Peek bandwidth (only permitted sustained 60 mins)

These are AMD EPYC Cores so no hardware acceleration (but most xeons do not have QS either)

If you are wanting hardware not Cloud, then take a look at Hetzner Server Auctions, get something with an ssd and HD

As for media storage you will want a Google Drive with a huge generous storage amount, then link to the server via rclone.

Get a cheap domain however from OVH.co.uk i buy all mine there as they are cheapest about. Include anycast.dns option for £1 as that expedites the dns changes near instantly and only costs £1 a year

Is it cheaper to host remotely or just buy a server or JBOD's?

Depends on what you want to achieve and have.

If you are only going to stream for yourself locally then it makes more sense to get your own hardware. To be fair in this case you could get away with a second hand Tiny mini server like a Lenovo M900 with a 9400t/9500t Again use Rclone for cheap google storage and you will be quids in.

Now if you are going to let family or friends have access remotely then that depends on how good your broadband is. if you have a GB connection then sure, if you have BT 80mb down 20 mb up then thats not going to cut it to be fair then cloud hosting makes more sense.

However you could set up a cheap vps as mentioned before and if you go the Docker route for install, if you decided to self host at home, it takes a few minutes to literally copy over the whole Docker setup so you do not have to start from scratch

I have vodafone 70mb up, 16 down. Media stored on my own server and I am able to stream to 3 people at the same time (1 local, 2 remote).

Haven't tried more people than that though

Unfortunately my internet is asymetrical 450/20 unless I want to spring for business class which I may do.

I stream to several remote clients by throttled transcoding to 1.5Mbps which is brilliant IMHO. Thanks @softworkz!

I even use it remotely on vacation or as you Britts say, holiday, buy my client is set to 15Mbps. 🤣

Any concerns about MPAA et al hosting in the cloud?

For the record i own all my media but have crappy upload speeds so when im out n about in hotels it would be like watching betamax again lol,  However all connections are via https between emby and clients so no issues there, sure i guess if someone was doing illegal stuff like downloading on a cloud server using public torrents etc then yes they would most likely have their instance / server shutdown and possibly have their details handed over.
