Subtitles Constantly Downloading

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. I recently got a new computer and after setting up my drives and Emby server I noticed that subtitles are constantly being downloaded, even if I already have subtitles for the movie. Each time I deleted the downloaded subtitle it would download again. I checked my settings and they seem fine.

It kept downloading them so many times OpenSubtitles threatened to block my IP address.

Uploading my log file as well.

Thank you, guys!

If it's a new install, it'll go through all your movies and all your episodes trying to download those that are missing. Non-VIP users have a 200/24hrs limit, VIP users get 1000/24hrs, so that warning is nothing to worry about, you'd just get timeouts till tomorrow and next schedule task run will resume where it stopped today. Not knowing size of your library, hard to guess how many subs it downloaded.

I removed all of the auto downloaded subtitles. But I found one that wasn't deleted. This subtitle is for the movie Day the World Ended. I already had the subtitle in the folder but for some reason it was downloaded.

I have my OpenSubtitles account set for English only.

Doesn't the setting "Skip if the default audio track matches" and "Skip if the video already contains embedded subtitles" prevent Emby from automatically downloading subtitles if they already exist?

It downloaded 195 subtitles that I already had.

Your existing subtitle is without ISO 639 language code, hence not English as far as Emby is concerned and needed to be downloaded. Likely same with other subs that were downloaded. If you want to prevent further/repeated downloads, you need to append your existing srts with .en or .eng before extension.

ISO 639-2 Language Code List - Codes for the representation of names of languages (Library of Congress) (loc.gov)

It prevents it in cases exactly as noted: in your case, if the media default Audio track is English (and properly tagged as such) or if the media contains embedded (internal) English subs.

No, it prevents automatically downloading subtitles if those specific conditions exist.

Is this a recent update or change? I didn't have this issue on my old computer or a year ago when I first tried Emby and Jellyfin.

Is there a setting in Emby to avoid this (other than disabling OpenSubtitles plugin) or will I now have to add .eng to all my subtitles?

AFAIK it has been like that for quite some time, as there's no other way to identify sub language.

So weird. Okay well I'll have to test things once OpenSubtitles allows me to download again, whenever that will be. For now I'll disable the plugin and just use FlashRenamer to quickly add the .eng to all my subtitles. The correct format would be: Day the World Ended (1955).en.srt  is that correct?

Awesome. Thank you guys so much!

I'm hoping to be able to give back next week when I get paid and purchase Emby Premier. I love the program. Now to scour the boards to find out how to set up access for remote  users.

Thanks again!

That's correct, and then run a library scan afterwards.

Thanks for the feedback.
