Server Issues...

Hello All,

I've had emby for a few years now, but for the past year anyone outside of the home can not connect to my server. Also, for the past week, outside of my pc, none of my devices can connect to emby within the home. I was thinking about deleting the server and starting  over, but thought I should reach out first. This is frustrating.

If clients within the LAN cannot connect that would point to a firewall issue.

What platform is Emby on?

Windows.

You can try shutting down Emby and go to Emby system.xml and change "<IsPortAuthorized>true</IsPortAuthorized>" to false and start Emby to try and reauthorize ports.  If that does not work, you may have to remove existing firewall rules and do previous steps.

If that resolves your local issue, then we can move to remote access issues.

Okay. Where do I find the "system.xml"?

Thanks for the response.

Assuming you have a normal install C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\config.

It just popped up, I didn't do anything. Outside the home, it is still not accessible.

Also, some devices can connect to emby and some can not, frustrating. Any advice? Appreciate it.

@Harris Media what exactly happens when they try to connect? Can you please give an example? What device?

Yes. For instance, one of my tv's and nvida sheild can connect, but not  another tv. My phone can connect, but my wife phone can not.

Anyone on the outside of the  home  defiantly can't  connect.

I had to create a Plex  account for the  people outside of my home. It works fine. We like emby better so, this is annoying.

What phone does your wife have? How exactly is she trying to connect?

We both have Android devices. For the longest we  had no issues than all of a sudden it started acting up. She connects just as I do, with the app. In the home, mines work, outside of the home, nothing, it just spins then says can not connect. Hers, does that all of the time.

Spoke too soon, mines has stopped working on my phone. "Connection Failure"

Is it possible that if you don't set the router to a reserved fixed virtual IP address for the workstation for the Emby server.  Then DHCP of the router allocates the IP to the Emby server when a new phone or computer starts to use the Wifi.  Would that not stop anyone from getting into the server, because the IP address changed?  I thought you had to assign a reserved IP address to the Emby server to avoid this happening.  I thought it's possible that you can get away from not doing this until the extra phone arrives and the address is assigned.

I reserve an IP address for Emby in the port forwarding in my router so this doesn't happen.  Is it suppose to work, without having to do this?

When devices stay on the network, the DHCP address lease is maintained.  Only if the device is off for long enough for the lease to run out is there a danger of a new address being allocated.  That said, it's no trouble to reserve the address in the router, or to make it static in the computer itself.

An update. I switched from  "Nest Wifi," to a different network in the home and  it worked with most of the devices that I checked. The next question would be, why is it not working still outside of the home; either with remotely out  of network and with the devices from the home outside of the home?
