jch 2 Posted February 15, 2022 Posted February 15, 2022 I’m running version 4.6.7.0_x86_64 on my Synology NAS 918+. This is the latest version. Previous versions worked well for a couple of years. Now however I experience lengthy video freezing on playback. On the Emby dashboard under active devices I see the following message: “The media is compatible with the device regarding resolution and media type (H.264, AC3, etc.), but is in an incompatible file container (.mkv, .avi, .wmv, etc.). The video will be re-packaged on the fly before streaming it to the device.” I’m playing MP4 files that played perfectly well in the past. Any idea what is causing this? Is the recent version to blame? There have been no network or hardware changes in my system.
Luke 42077 Posted February 16, 2022 Posted February 16, 2022 Hi there, can we please look at an example? Thanks.
jch 2 Posted February 16, 2022 Author Posted February 16, 2022 Not sure what kind of an example I can show you. Here's a screen shot of the dashboard Direct Streaming message I get. I was playing a simple MP4 video which froze after a couple of minutes. This never used to happen.
Luke 42077 Posted February 16, 2022 Posted February 16, 2022 @jch can you please attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue? Thanks !

jch 2 Posted February 16, 2022 Author Posted February 16, 2022 By the way, the same file plays fine on Plex under the same conditions - on the same IOS device on wifi. This used to play okay on Emby as well.
jch 2 Posted February 16, 2022 Author Posted February 16, 2022 Sorry... not wifi. I meant cell service.
Luke 42077 Posted February 16, 2022 Posted February 16, 2022 HI, often this is a sign that the bitrate is too high for the connection. Please try lowering the in-app quality setting and see if that helps. Thanks.
jch 2 Posted February 17, 2022 Author Posted February 17, 2022 I suppose that could be the case - bitrate too high for my cell connection. However, the extra bandwidth needed seems to have increased due to the need (now) to transcode these MP4 files that to my knowledge didnt require that in the past. Also, I noticed that the Emby package for my Synology is no longer available. To troubleshoot the freezing issue, I uninstalled Emby and was going to reinstall but the package was gone. I had to install in Docker which was no problem, just a change I was not aware of. Thank you for your help.
Luke 42077 Posted February 17, 2022 Posted February 17, 2022 Quote Also, I noticed that the Emby package for my Synology is no longer available Hi, what do you mean no longer available? Available from where exactly? What package?
jch 2 Posted February 17, 2022 Author Posted February 17, 2022 You can install various 'packages' on Synology NAS devices through the Synology package manager. These are available from various sources. The Emby package I ran on my NAS came from https://synology.emby.media and was freely accessible by the package manager. While this worked a year or so ago when I first installed Emby, that location is no longer valid or at least it no longer functions.
Carlo 4560 Posted February 17, 2022 Posted February 17, 2022 @jch Yes that was depreciated a while ago. Besides being in many different stores you should always be able to access all Emby Server or app clients from here: https://emby.media/download.html which is the download menu on the website. It's a lot cleaner this way with all downloads in the same place.
