boardbum 1 Posted February 3, 2022 Posted February 3, 2022 Hi, When Emby starts memory runs aroun 165MB. It will stay this way for days if nothing is played. When something is played memory jumps very high; sometimes to about 90% but not always - depends on transcode. I expect this, but with only 4MB of RAM on my vps you can understand that I like as much free as possible. So, after playback ends in Emby the memory usage for emby is usually 750-850 (aprox) and stays that way for days unless I restart the server. Is this normal? I imagine it will not go back to 165MB, but I'd expect it not be lower than 700-800 MB. If I'm wrong then no worries. I'm attaching logs. Side Note: I noticed a bunch of Error messages but have no idea what they are for. embyserver-63779488446.txt
Luke 42078 Posted February 4, 2022 Posted February 4, 2022 Hi, please try removing the dlna and email plugins, then restart the server and see if that helps. thanks.
boardbum 1 Posted February 4, 2022 Author Posted February 4, 2022 These are the Only ones left. I watched a move and the memory was round 948.20MB. 2 hours later it's still stuck at 948.2. Should it go down by itself?
boardbum 1 Posted February 5, 2022 Author Posted February 5, 2022 (edited) just relying on task manager. In the image you can see where gues played a few minutes of 2 movies. I did this as a test. Memory before playback was 165 and as you can see now is 912 with no user activity since - it's been 24 hours with no activity. Maybe Emby will be forced to give up some memory if another program needs it, but I've seen Emby at 1.6GB (and other high programs like qbtorrent) leaving little free memory. Now as stated if this is normal then there is not much I can do about it. If linux will manage the memory to recail some for programs that are in need of it fine. If not then I have to think about what I want to have running on this vps. You'll see I have Emby and Plex on this VPS. I prefer Emby as it does a better job of streamng/trancoding - plex buffers too much for the same movie that emby plays just fine. Plex though can give access to 2 serves at once so I don't have to keep explaing to the wife how to switch servers on emby. (now I pick formats for the vps that don't need transcoding for format or bitrate for her stuff - mine I'm fine with switching servers on emby to get better viewing). Ok, so is this memory usage normal? Do I need to worry about how high it gets? Can I do anything about it? or should I just live with restarting Emby every day or after each use? (is there a way to make it restart after someone is done viewing in that case?) Thanks Edited February 5, 2022 by boardbum
Q-Droid 989 Posted February 5, 2022 Posted February 5, 2022 If you're concerned about memory keep an eye on swap usage and if that's ok then leave it be. The system reclaims memory when needed and leaves it alone when not. So if your server is not showing signs of memory exhaustion, like actual errors and processes crashing or OOM kills, then it's fine.
