Extract subtitles on the fly

Hello,

First post here but I have been  using emby for some years now.

I'm having some issues with the subtitle on the fly extraction. So I host my emby server on windows and I use the emby android app in combination with a chromecast ultra to cast my series.

The thing is, the extraction of the subtitles really varies from time to time, it can be a few seconds, a few minutes and sometimes when I'm watching a HEVC 4K movie it can take up to 10 minutes. The problem with this is that when I start casting and the subtitle extraction starts, the controls on the emby app disappear. I cannot pause, fastforward, or stop the casting while the subtitles are being extracting(also not on the google home app). There's also the blue loading circle that will keep turning and turning while the subtitles are being extracted.

Now burning in subtitles is not really an option because it will make matters just so much worse. I'm also aware that srt files work much much better, but it's also a pain to download srt files for all my series, I might as well just wait for the subtitle to be extracted.

So I have a few questions about this:

  • Which hardware is really limiting my performance here? I have an old i5 3450 with 16GB of ram. Which for the most part works really well actually. Would upgrading my computer make any noticeable difference? What should be upgraded?
  • Will hardware acceleration make any difference towards this process? I do not use any hardware acceleration at this time.
  • Can this process be automated? Why not extract all subtitles from all series at night while my computer is idle? Run it on a task?
  • Can we consider the fact that my controls disappear as a bug in the app? Can I report it as so?

If any logs or more data is required, please ask and I'll provide but I don't know what else to include right now.

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards

HI, it is probably the disk I/O performance of the drive holding the video file.

It won't help, no.

Yea ideally we should handle the delay in a better way.

Thank you for your response. I'll move some files from the hdd to my ssd and see if the time improves.

Hello,

Just wanted to say that I installed an SSD onto my computer and that loading of the file is much faster. About 2 minutes on a 50GB mkv movie instead of 10 minutes or longer, and just seconds for series. So you were right, thank you.
