DTS XLL audio issue?

Recommended Posts

I have a HEVC 8-bit formatted 1080p file in the MKV container using MKVToolNix and the file plays fine on it's own.  When I jump around it's playing before I even take my finger off the jump button and never misses a beat.  When I add in the untouched lossless DTS XLL track the track always plays, seeking on the video is a bit slower but jumping around eventually the video will get jerky and will continue playing that way until you jump somewhere else in the video.  If I go back to seconds it will then play fine but something isn't right.  This is direct playing but obviously using a player from Emby.  Is there any known issues with XLL audio?  It seems to play OK even when the video is stuttering but obviously doesn't happen if the audio isn't in the file.  Playing on an NVidia Shield Pro 2019 with latest updates.

Gave that a try.  Same hanging on the video side when jumping around where the audio would startup immediately, but was able to get the stuttering effect like I did with the other one.  Even with the other one it's not all the time but this delay in video playing and stuttering is specific to a set of videos with this kind of audio.  With the standard android app, it MAY have been more difficult to get the stuttering to happen but did.  Though more difficult is subjective as if you played the movie from start to finish without moving around probably would never see it.  I got this initially as when I do some video cleanup I run thru the footage on the TV to make sure all is good and exhibited this problem on every item.  Note on my PC with VLC don't see this.

Note:  I just ran thru VLC on my NVidia Shield.  When I jumped around music and video would start at the same time and no stuttering that I could reproduce.

Can you provide a sample video for testing? Thanks.

I could but any idea how?  Since it's something you have to jump around in the video to show things, and the overall file is 16GB, not sure how to send that or a decent size portion of it.  Note the audio DTS file itself is 2.3GB so if I can get that somewhere maybe you could multiplex it into some other video file.  I'd never say I'm 100% sure but fairly confident from my tests the video is fine and the audio is causing this at least in whatever player Emby is using being direct play.

Let me know on the above as probably want to see it and this isn't a quality solution, but someone suggested converting to test the DTS Master audio to AAC.  I did that and the stuttering wasn't there.  Seems something with the player used by Emby based on findings, but wanted to add this to my response.

Done a lot of testing, didn't hear back about what to do with my files.  That said,

1. Converted the video with many different options with ffmpeg, didnt change anything.

2. If I multiplex with MKVToolNix the DST XLL or DTS HD Master Audio and jump thru the video playback will eventually stutter

3. If I extract the DTS Core and insert it into the video things are fine.

4. If I convert the DTS Master to AC3 things play fine.

So in my opinion clearly something with the player used with Emby at least with the Android Version.

Hi, can you try sideloading our standard android app on the same device and let us know how that compares?

Thanks !

Would you mind downloading again and trying again? Thanks !

Nope, same thing, hold down the jump forward button on the remote, let it jump thru several minutes of the video and let go.  Starts stuttering on screen.  I have a low bitrate version that still seems to do this but did you want the full 14GB of the video?  I have a dropbox that can hold that, just didn't know if you would download it.

If that's what it takes to reproduce this, then yes please. Thanks.

Are you still running into this following the Shield software updates?

Depends on the above.  If you mean updating to Android 11 then yes was there when I first had this issue.  If you are referring to an update to the app, then I haven't seen one lately.  I've stalled on this at this point waiting for review of the video but haven't seen any software updates since posting it.

I can, but did you see any issues with the video?  Can I take it down from the public link?  Note the video is direct playing so doubt you are going to find anything in the server logs but will the next time I can get access to the system.  TV always in use.

You can take it down. I've got it. We are still investigating, so a server log would be most helpful. You can get one from the server web interface. Thanks.
