You've hit the nail on the head - the bif is fully loaded at the start of the 'seek' and is likely to be fully loaded in one hit - it doesn't 'seek' for each image, it keeps it in memory.  

Your best bet is to setup a test library and experiment, only you can decide if it has 'lag' or not - but I'd be very very surprised if it did with your infrastructure ..
