Custom metadata - will it be lost with refresh?

I've struggled for 2 days with just one series being "Heimat". Both Tvdb and TMDB have wrong search results, mismatch series and seasons or no data on the series 2-5.

I've read the tutorials on naming and did a lot of testing which helped a bit, but did not fix all issues.

What is the best way forward?

  1. I can create my custom metadata in the app or web UI - but are those edits preserved in the next metadata refresh on the server?
  2. Or should I rather enter my data in TvdB and/or TMDB and hope for a better search result next time my server refreshes its libraries?

Couldnt find the answer in this forum or tutorial.

This question also applies to my own recordings which arent in tvdb or tmdb: is custom metadata retained through refreshes?

If you have the ability to add/edit data from the source provider - then that would be preferable.

However,  If you lock manually edited data via the emby metadata editor (or direct in the GUI) - then no, it will not be overwritten on a metadata refresh.  Look for the little padlock to the right of the field.

Thanks rbjtech, i have a safe path forward then. Would hate losing more time on being too ambitious 😊

Hi.  If you are customizing metadata locally, be sure you've turned on saving this to NFO files.  That will ensure it survives not just a refresh, but moving the items and a complete re-install.

Thanks for the advice. I'll change that setting indeed. Becoming more and more 'fluent' in emby configuration and things go quite well this way. Another thing I noticed is that I have to save copies of the 'poster.jpg' if I created them myself, because those do not survive a metdata refresh with creation of images 🙂

If you enable the option to save images along side your media, then that will take care of that too.
