Accessing chromecast from an Emby remote server?

Hi everyone, I searched a lot on Google, but I can’t find any solution or clear answer to my problem.

Yesterday, I finished setting up my Emby server on my Synology Ds920+ NAS and everything is working fine on my LAN. I made an account for my friend, so she can watch her content from her home.

I gave her the remote address of my server (WAN), she connected successfully with her phone via chrome (only device she has), but she can’t cast any content from Emby to her Chromecast. The Chromecast is not even showing up in the available devices.

She is telling me that her phone is connected to the same wifi network as her Chromecast.

Is there a way she (or I) could make it work, or it’s simply impossible to connect to a local device when using a remote Emby server?

Thank you!

Hi, the browser only allows Chromecast usage if the web app is running on https, so you'd need to setup https for that.

Alternatively just have her use our android or iOS app.

Oh ok! So if I make her download the app, she can then connect to my server using the WAN IP (in the app) and she will be able to cast her things to her Chromecast?

Hi Luke,

I’m just informing you that it is not working even with ssl configured. I configured ssl and https on port 8920 and I still can’t cast anything via a web browser.

No worries though, it still works through the app, I just wanted to let you know just in case it is coming  from Emby’s end and it’s a thing that needs to be corrected.

You need to be using the web app on https in order to be able to cast to Chromecast, and it's only supported in Chromium based browsers such as Chrome. I don't believe there's anything we need to correct regarding this.  Chromecast is tested pretty much daily as it's one of the most commonly used devices.

My bad, I hadn’t noticed that the chromecast option was gonna list all devices available for casting. I thought they were all going to show up individually.  Everything is working. My apologies.
