Many files doesn't play unless transcoding. [Shield, HEVC/x265]

Hi

I use Emby on my Shield only for the kids account. I use Kodi with the Emby addon for our main account so I don't have this problem.

Many files doesn't work unless I force a transcode. The files are mostly in HEVC that I've reencoded myself with FFMPEG. When I start the file I get a scrolling circle as it should but then only a black screen. All control are working so the app hasn't freezed or anything so I'm able to navigate to and change to transcoding. Many files are quite low quality in order to save space so transcoding them makes the quality even poorer. Have had this problem for a couple of months. If I play the files with VLC, Kodi etc they work out of the box.

File info according to Emby:

Video

Title 576p HEVC
Codec HEVC
Profile Main
Level 93
Resolution 1024x576
Aspect Ratio 80:43
Interlaced No
Framerate 23.976
Bitrate 1,428 kbps
Bit Depth 8 bit
Pixel Format yuv420p
Reference Frames 1

Logs are attached. Thanks

Sent it again just now

File: Captain.Underpants.The.First.Epic.Movie.2017.SWEDISH.720p.BluRay.x264-FULRiP.mkv (reencoded to HEVC and 576p, but haven't changed the filename)

What happened: Try to play the file, black screen because of direct play. Navigate to cog --> send logs.

Can you also try side loading our standard Android app on the same device and let us know how that compares?

Thanks.

Hi Luke

It works on the Shield with the side loaded app you suggested. 👍

Hi.  Looks like the audio is encoded incorrectly.  Note the "0" channels:

01-08 13:25:40.825 12914 12914 D EventLogger: FfmpegAudioRenderer [
01-08 13:25:40.826 12914 12914 D EventLogger: Group:0, adaptive_supported=N/A [
01-08 13:25:40.826 12914 12914 D EventLogger: [X] Track:0, id=2, mimeType=audio/mp4a-latm, codecs=mp4a.40.2, channels=0, sample_rate=48000, language=sv, supported=YES

01-08 13:25:40.826 12914 12914 D EventLogger: ]

What happens if you play the file before you re-encoded it?

Don't have the original file but I guess it will work. But it works with the other Android app that Luke suggested and on my phone (which use that suggested app). Both direct playing.

To be honest I'm not that good with FFMpeg and have used some presets for my encoding. But still, it works everywhere but on the Android TV app.

If the standard app is working for you then you can use that one and we'll look into the difference.

Thanks.
