I have one Audio DVD and is there a way to play it?

I have one cornercase question, I got my hands on a Audio DVD - a format that never did fly.
But as it is Queen's 'A night at the Opera', a record that really can make use of the 5.1 audio (Brain May mixed it for 5.1), it would be great to be able to play it in Emby

But I can't get it to work, it only buffers and will not start.

It would be cool to be able to play this as a DVD, as you can jump between tracks and select the extra info stored there.

Can you provide logs?

You can also try to reencode it with tools like "handbrake" and convert it to mkv or mp4  containers so we know this should be played.

DVD-A is a different format from DVD-video; the audio is either WAV or MLP, and video tools will not touch it because it's in a different folder (AUDIO_TS):

Most DVD-As have a video layer as well, containing the audio in AC-3 or DTS format, with still images for each track.  Handbrake will read the video layer of some of those, but not all - I tested two, and it hung on one of them.  MKVToolNix, when I opened the audio directory explicitly, was prepared to extract the menu, but not the audio content.

To get the proper audio off a DVD-A disk, you need a program such as DVD Audio Extractor, which I use.  Be careful googling for alternatives, because many programs which using that name as a search term brings up are merely extracting the audio from DVD-Vs.

Thanks, Paul. I will look for that.
In this case (and to my surprise) there is only a VIDEO_TS folder that contains everything.
I wonder if I can rename that... Maybe worth a try.

 

The format, Audio DVD (with a VIDEO_TS folder with Vob and other files) it can be played in MPC-hc as well as in VLC.

In windows I actually got this error "No compatible streams are currently available."

Yes, I can convert it to mp4, and will do that, but the DVD menu system and extras is harder to get to...

But I guess it's an either or situation and if I want the whole dvd experience, I'll play it on the computer.

I looked up the disk you named, and found there were different mixes (Brian May's was the second, as he wasn't satisfied with the original), and releases both on DVD-A and later on DVD-V (i.e. lossy audio only), and most recently a BD release - so my assumption you had the DVD-A version was misplaced.

I think playing from a straight rip of the DVD structure is deprecated in Emby.  I recall others having issues (with video media), and being told it was not under active development, or some such. 

So, given you have a DVD-V, I would agree that simply ripping the contents into MKV would be the way to go.  Even if you have to do it manually, you can put chapters in to enable jumping between tracks.  Or you could rip the tracks into separate audio-only files and play them that way; Emby's audio facilities are not limited to stereo - I have audio-only surround tracks which play in it just fine.

I have a lot of DVD music and Pure Audio Blu-ray discs in my collection.  This is what I normally do

• Rip disc using Makemkv
• Split new mkv with Mkvtoolnix by chapters (most audio discs have chapters marking the different songs).  You can eliminate the video track and just leave the audio and chapter files which will create individual mka files for each song.
• Depending on what audio codec is inside the mka convert it to your desired format.  If it's lossless then FLAC 5.1 would be my choice.
