Hi,

I have read and read.

I can't turn off HDR in samsung tv.

Supposedly setting output in Nvidia Shield to 8-bit disables HDR. Did that, did ALL options for 4k in Shield, but my TV still "sees" hdr and 4k HDR movies look horrible out of Emby.

What can I do? I want to get rid of HDR but still watch high bitrate 4k movies out of Emby.

Thank you!

why dont you want hdr?  there is a setting  to enable Enable HDR tone mapping:

under transcoding in server settings.  make sure that enabled and hdr should look good.  otherwise make sure your player is play direct and not transcoding the video.

if you just disable hdr then the color will be washed out.  thats why you want tone mapping turned on.  it does use much more cpu power though

The colors are terrible with HDR on, that’s why. The internet is full of “dark/washed out color with HDR” topics.

it turns out my cheap LCD Samsung tv, which is “HDR-ready,” is not really able to do HDR properly. I wish I had an OLED, but I don’t.

Also, I am indeed direct playing everything. Bad color with HDR.

My Emby server can’t handle transcoding. It’s weak.

Hi.  That combination is going to be a problem.  If your TV doesn't support HDR and your server is not powerful enough to transcode in order to tone-map, then you need non HDR material.

However, you said that you were using a Shield and that should be able to do the tone-mapping for you.  Be sure you haven't disabled that in the Shield...

Unless your Samsung TV is absolute garbage, there should be no issues.  Use the Shield to do the tone mapping as EBR suggests.  There is no point in watching 4k movies if they are not in HDR as tone mapping is no where near perfect.  Just stop watching them and wait till you can afford a better TV.

Is it enabled by default in the shield? Tone mapping?

If you are direct playing hdr content tland it looks washed out.. your tv likely isn't an HDR tv or you have HDR turned off.

Direct playing hdr tone mapping isn't even used.

There is no setting on the Shield to tonemap HDR to SDR because it's automatic based on what the Shield detects your TV supports.  See nVidia's response in the link below

HDR to SDR | NVIDIA GeForce Forums

You should see what's supported in the Resolution setting

I would concentrate on the TV settings to try and get colors correct.

Do you have a TV that supports HDR?

I do: it's a cheap costco Samsung UN75NU6950.
https://www.costco.com/wcsstore/CostcoUSBCCatalogAssetStore/Attachment/9436950SS.pdf

I have HDR enabled in the TV.

In the shield:
"Resoution: 4k 59.940 Hz (default) HDR10 Ready"
So that tells me the Shield "sees" the TV as HDR-ready.

Advanced display options:
"Match content color space (automatically switches display between Rec. 2020 and Rec. 709)" is enabled.

Dynamic Range is greyed out.

Custom display mode is on the default the Shield selects:
"
3840x2160 59.940 Hz.
YUV 420 10-bit Rec. 2020
HDR10 Rready
"

Thank you!

Movies are HEVC HDR10. Not Dolby Vision.

TV is on auto update for firmware and is reporting on being on the latest (1320) version.

Thank you

Maybe the HDR on the TV is poor.  Is it possible to turn that off at the TV so that the Shield will tone-map?

The source of the 'problem' is likely the TV configuration - my advice would be to factory reset and then download some HDR test patterns and actually test / calibrate the TV first to ensure it meets basic HDR requirements.

avsforums HDR test patterns link

Yes a lower end LCD TV is not going to rival an OLED for colour accuracy/blacks but this is still a relatively modern HDR10+ (dynamic) Samsung TV - if it really is that bad, then it may be faulty - things like the backlights (producing the 'brightness') may have failed.

Thank you all. I’ll try a factory reset.
I assume the regular one from user menu is fine.
As in I don’t have to go into service menu and do it there.

What’s your recommendation for display mode for out of the box starting point?

Don't change anything.. and try an HDR movie.. see if anything changed.

The next step would be to factory the Nvidia shield.  It may not be passing HDR through to the tv properly. By default it should

After seeing you post your information about the TV, the TV itself is below garbage tier.  Use the calibration settings rtings has to try to get the best out of your TV, which appears to be not much.  You are honestly going to have to replace the TV with something better if you want an actual HDR experience.  I would just disable HDR on the TV and let the Shield do it's thing.

Because months ago i was desperate, I researched and actually did the rtings settings. still “garbage” and yet they were swaying what great color the tv had out of the box. I guess SDR is actually pretty good.

And THAT’s what I want to do. Disable HDR but I can’t figure out how to do it on the TV either.

Sure enough saw that in my research. My tv does NOT have that option in settings>display>expert settings

Does the Shield note have an option in Advanced Display Settings to enable or disable HDR?  I know that Android TV does have that option, as I can do it on my cheap Chinese boxes, and my Fire Devices.
