4K content on Docker: Strange loading behavior

Dear Team,

Maybe can someone explain strange behavior of Emby on my Raspi Docker.

Specs:

- Server: Raspi 4, 8GB Ram, Ubuntu Server 64bit

- TV: LG C1, Ethernet 100Mbit

- Internet: 300Mbit download and 100Mbit upload. With VPN - 120Mbit download and 100 Mbit upload

- Software: Docker with EmbyServer official image, + Nordvpn Docker

- Testing video file: 4k video with HDR with ~50Mbit bitrate

Background:

I would like to stream STRM files from my own remove server to TV.

If I will start to stream STRM video file via regular inet - everything works great: my server downloading stream on 300Mbits and move it to TV on 50Mbit upload rate, here is totally fine.

Issue:

then I connecting my Emby Server in Docker to VPN the download speed speed drops to 120Mbit download with 100 Mbit upload to my TV. And the video is starting to freeze from time to time with constant download speed 120Mbit to server and 60Mbit upload from server to TV. after 15 mins the video stream stabilizes and download == upload and no freeze at all.

during this time no increase in RAM usage on server, no increase in SWAP, the cache folder stays the same.

Please help to identify why freezes are happening with VPN, as bandwidth can handle the load

Hi there, can we please look at an example?

Thanks !

Sure, here is attached logsembyserver.txt

OK so you played something in our LG app. What exactly happened in this example?

If I am playing without VPN - I see that Emby Server on my Raspbery actively downloading the stream from internet and streaming it to LG app. During first 10 mins download 300 Mbit, upload to TV to 60Mbit (==bitrate of the video). After 10 mins download and upload equal. Some feeling that Emby Server was doing some buffering/caching during this 10 mins. But during all the time - the playback is smooth.

Then I am switching VPN - my connectivity become limited: download from inet 120 Mbit, upload 100 Mbit. Then I am playing the same 60Mbit Bitrate file - first 10 mins I see download from inet a max 120Mbits and upload == to Bitrate of the video (60 MBits). During this 10 mins all the time I see lags every 10-15 seconds, after 10 mins the download == upload to TV and video continue play smoothly.

So I see strange situation: direct or via VPN has capacity to play direct stream with 60 Mbit bit rate, but in real situation - with 120 Mbit it plays with lags.

I see that first 10 mins it is doing buffering - but don’t see dramatic change in RAM, swap or disk utilization.

The I put video on pause - I see that Emby Server output goes to zero, but download from Inet continuous on the max speed. Hovewer, it is not caching anywhere

maybe you can advice how to tweak Emby Server to write stream cache to disk or RAM?

sorry for the long message

Can you try lowering the in-app quality setting in the Emby LG app to reduce the bitrate?
